Timing chain recalls ?

So one day my mechanic noted that the timing chain is noisy. A few months later I got a CEL with P0015 (Camshaft Position “B” - Timing Over-Retarded) iirc. The mechanic said the chain is likely stretched. Took it to another mechanic, he basically confirmed - "could be a timing chain, or an oil pump, or both". Expensive.
One of them also mentioned that he thinks that BMW USA issued a recall, and I can try contacting BMW Canada to see if they can do anything. I can't seem to find anything related to N20 timing chain issues in recalls. Can anyone confirm if the recall exists?
The car is 2012 X1 28i with 120k km on it.

As far as I know there is no recall, but the related parts was changed/updated in 2015.
I would suggest you talk to the dealership. It looks like in some cases they helped the customer through BMW.
I hope you saved your service records and kept it up to date.

No official recall on this matter.
Hope you have a good relationship with your local BMW dealership.

More than likely the chain is good, it's probably the "plastic" yes plastic chain guides wearing out. Harley had the same issues with their chain guides also. I am blown away by using plastic in a motor that gets so hot.

Just wondering - what was your oil change interval?

When I discussed this issue with my indy mechanic - asking if I should proactively change to the new chain guide design, he was familiar with it and is convinced the problem is due to the long oil change intervals - and advises 8000km oil changes.

X1GTA your indie is not incorrect. I had a similar conversation with our BMW service advisor that seems knowledgeable around this issue. Long OCI contributes to this and suggested frequent fresh oil changes as a prevention.

As fuel distributor somewhat knowledgeable oil man, I'm not feeling the long oil change as cause.

I have one of those in a 2014 X1 s28i, and I'll chaNGE OIL by 10k miles with Mobil 1 0w40.

If it makes noise I'll fix it before it shreds engine.

There are some that speculate that ASS is responsible.

That's more likely, and I turned mine off.

At least there's a heavy starter on car to last longer if used less.

ASS in our cars are poorly implemented and uncouth. In addition it adds wear various engine components. Even the manual stated that.

There are numerous threads on this issue that I am beginning to feel it is overblown exacerbated by internet echoes.

I measured gas use with my scanguage on my 2.0L, and it's .23gallons/hour idling with no loads like A/C.

That's lower than most cars, about 75 cents an hour, and not a worry to me.

I do like BMW's idea of stopping battery charging while accelerating or charging more while braking; whichever way you want to explain it.
