Calling runflat experts
Ok, it finally happened, nail got in my tyre, had it repaired at a tyre store (after filling up air at a fuel station and driving for a further 15km).
Indicator hasn't lit up yet, however should I still replace or continue? Any risk of damaging my rim and/or suspension? Went to my BMW dealer and he suggested I drive for a few days to see if indicator lights up again, surprisingly he didn't try to convince me to buy new tyres, even told me some customers drove repaired tyres till they replaced them after normal wear. Still, what do you experts think I should do? |

Depending on how long you drove it while flat, there might be damage to the sidewall reinforcement (that's what the manufacturer and what BMW would say when you would ask them to repair a run-flat).
If you didn't drive very far while flat, and had the tire properly patched from the inside(not just plugged from the outside), then if I were you, I wouldn't worry about it. |

I got a nail in my run flats on a new Mini Clubman S, got the hole patched and put 18,000 miles on the tire. I've had several nail holes patched with no issues but never drove any of them with really low pressure. I'm thinking if you drive and still have over 20 lbs of pressure you probably are ok to drive it a few miles without really doing any damage to the sidewalls.

If properly repaired, you have nothing to worry about. Usually, shops not equipped to repair run-flats won't touch them. I've had them repaired at America's Tire without further issues.
The BMW dealers here don't repair runflats. They try and sell you the tire and wheel warranty plan up front then punish you if you don't get it by selling you new tires at inflated prices if anything goes wrong. |

I had one of my Goodyear Efficientgrips repaired just a few week after I got the car, and it's still going strong after almost 40,000 kms!
I think tread punctures can be repaired, but sidewall intrusions are more serious? Last edited by danintas; 01-23-2013 at 06:50 AM.. Reason: can't type! |

Thanks guys, luckily the nail was near the middle of the tyre, well away from the sidewall. The tyre dealer also didn't suspect any damage on the tyre - and he had the Pirellis in stock if he really wanted to make a buck. I'll see how it goes.

Well worth it, because that's where the girls were. (Waiting for the guy from NM to say "You had a LAKE?") |
