Cruise Control Needle Off

Anybody have this problem? My speedo says 80, my cruise control says 77, my gps says 75. The cruise control and speedo sometimes matches and sometimes doesn't. The amount it's off by varies up to 2 notches or 4mph. Never seen this "feature" in a car before.

Whenever I go over a bump, the lower center console and left door near the window creaks. Been to service twice and each time they claim to have found the problem and fixed it but it happens again on the bumpy roads on the way home from the dealership.

Pretty much every BMW I've owned has had a speedo that was off 2-3 mph from gps and always said I was going faster than I actually was. I've never really checked against the cruise although the cruise does jump around based on flat terrain or hills. Sometimes I thing it's based on whether you have the standard size wheels vs larger rims. I have not checked my X1 or M235 but with 13 other BMW's they were always off.

Yep, I've heard that the cruise works off of what the car assumes is actual speed, not the speedo displayed speed which is 2-5% high.

I've only used cruise control once though, just to see what the lowest speed you could activate it at was.

Cruis control has always been the same as speedo. On downhill may spike for a litle bit that's probably becauseour cc doesn't use brakes to slow down.

I was able to code the speedo to show accurate speed by telling the car it has bigger (or smaller) wheels/tires.

With my cruise on, the needles line up even with my larger than stock tires.

haven't had the center console creak, but the door, yeah. It stopped after I had the car detailed/paint sealed. I think it was the rubber and the paint in the door frame moving a bit on bumps.

I'll check my cruise control next time I drive, I think its similar to what yours is doing though.

I've used cruise a fair amount (especially on our trip to Disneyland and back) and the cruise marker and the speedo needle always matched up perfectly. I will say though that I have coded my car to display the actual speed in the OBC display...and I can confirm what others here are saying that the speedo is off by ~4mph at 80mph and about 3mph at 65mph.

Try a gps and see what it says, it will be off several mph.

I know that part is off, but the OP was stating and showing that with his cruise on, the needles don't line up.

Speedo and cruise control always aligned. Car is completely standard.

The cruise control most definitely can and does use the brakes to slow the car. Easy to prove - put it at a speed eg 50mph then do three full pulls on the lever to drop to 35 - car will slow sharply.

You can have the car coded to display the true speed in the cluster and/or to have the speedometer display the "uncorrected" speed.

I have also noticed the same with my X1. Speedo reads one way, cruse another, my GPS reads almost 5 mph slower, and my wife (who was one day following me on the interstate) called me and asked me why I was only going 65 mph.

I'm interested in the coded display in the cluster. Who would do this? not the dealership!?

For another data point, I used my cruise control today, 80mph, and both were spot on. No coding has been done.
