Typical on Christmas Eve

Just on my way home after a 2 mile trip and I get this loud screeching metallic noise from the car. Sometimes it gets very high pitched squeaky and then changes to a sound like metal grinding. Really bl**dy awful.

Put the car on the drive and listened to the engine. Sounds Ok. Rev'd it up to 3k and still sounds fine.

Engaged reverse and move back slowly... Noise appears almost straight away and is the same. Same when I pull forward. Braking makes no difference as the sound continues through it.

Hard to describe, but think of a rusty old bike wheel going squeak, squeak, grind, grind and you have a rough idea.

Pads and discs look fine, though I guess something could be stuck in there and getting caught???

Mileage now 18k... any ideas what this can be? I'll be worrying about it till the 28th when the 'stealers' opens again.

Merry Christmas.

J.

sounds like either a stone caught in a brake guard or something round the prop....

Had a similar issue with my 2008 X5. Started as an irritation, and got progressively worse. Drove to the dealer, and everyone there heard me approach - lots of attention as I pulled into the service area. Turned out to be a chunk of asphalt / tarmacadam lodged between the front passenger brake disc and pad. They showed it to me and it was between the size of a pea and a kidney bean, and polished like a diamond.

Sorted now. Stone stuck somewhere in the right front side brake. Called BMW Assistance and they told me what to do.

Find a carpark, drive forward, stop, engage reverse, hard left lock and reverse back at speed.

I heard the offending item rattle as it came out
