Question Small Rear Seats

Hey everyone,

I know this is technically a 1 series but does anyone else think the rear seats are rather tiny and non spacious? Heck my f30 rear seating has more space.

Even with the front seat up to almost uncomfortable position, rear passengers have space and leg room issues.

Just wondering people's thoughts on this.

It's normal as its using the old 3-series chassis and for sure the F30 3-series has more legroom than the X1 but headroom is superb in X1. It's ok for four adult with 5'9" sitting comfortably.

The driver side dash has ample knee room and head room compared to 3-series vehicles. If you raise the front seat higher I've found you can have comfortable space for both the front and back seat passenger (especially with panoramic roof open.

Also, while my vehicle was delivered with the rear seats in a normal position, I discovered they could be reclined further. I rode in the backseat comfortably while I let my friend test drive yesterday.

Our car seat is installed on the passenger side and there is definitely less space vs the F30.

I'm 6'2" and can fit behind myself. As was said earlier, it's the size of an e90, of course it's smaller than the much larger F30. Thankfully so for some of us.

I am 5'9" and my wife is 5'5". If my wife sits behind me, it is comfortable for both short and long trip. If another person of my size sits behind me, it is comfortable definitely for short trip. But, it may not be comfortable enough for long trip (say more than 5 hour driving). X1 is definitely too small to seat four persons higher than 6'.
My friend has a last generation 3 series (2009). He especially compared my X1 with his 328i and said X1's rear seat is larger than that of his 328i.

Sorry but this is Bullshit. One of the first thing I noticed is how great the rear space is for a "compact" car. I would be very skeptical comparing it to a E90 3series. I'm sure the X1 has better legroom than the old 3.

Anyway, this is a "sporty compact car". If you want a lot of rear space don't take a sporty compact car. I have two kids and the X1 is just perfect for my family needs ( boot and rear space ) and it drives a lot sportier than a X3 or a X5 for a great pricing too. So it's a win-win situation.

I would take the X1 anytime before a 3 series (even the touring ) as long as I've got to carry the family ... after, well that's another story he he :-) I had the chance to drive back to back the E90 328i xdrive and the X1 28i xdrive in a BMW event and I have to admit ( not a big deel ) that the 3 series is a blast to drive. The greatest handling car I have ever driven bottom line. The X1 thank's to it's higher profile can't equal the handling of the 3 series even if it handles very well and is a great car by itself. He has to give the edge to the 3. But, it's the best compromise ( price / cargo / sport ) BMW has in it's lineup so Enjoy it guys !

Have a nice day everybody !

BS is little harsh, no?
Obviously, opinions about space are opinions. So everyone's will be a bit different.
Personally, my OPINION about the FEELING of the X1 is that it is very small inside, in any dimension other then headroom. It feels more cramped than my E46 sedan, in fact. I noticed in particular that the front foot wells and the width between interior door handles feels tighter. The rear seat does not seem to have more room, and ingress/egress is made more difficult for tall people because the distance from the B-pillar the front of the rear seat seems tighter than my E46.
Again, these are opinions, as I haven't measured anything.

I agree that BS is a bit harsh. However, I have owned the E46 and E90 sedans and my parents have the F30. The X1 does seem tighter door handle to door handle (evidenced by the middle console & cup holder design).

However rear passenger space is on par with the E90, better that the E46, and worse than the F30. If you take advantage of the additional headroom of the X1 and raise the front seats up, IMO the rear passenger space may be a tad bit better than the E90.

I agree with the BS call. I have to laugh when someone buys a small vehicle and then complains that it is small. I guess you should have bought an X5.

In my opinion:
X5 = Small SUV
X3 = Crossover
X1 = Tall station wagon. EPA doesn't classify it as an SUV or crossover at all, but a midsize car, and I tend to agree.

I.e. neither is particularly big. I parked my old SUV next to an X5 just the other day, and was thinking "it's really that small?"
Anyone looking for a people carrier might want to avoid the BMW X series, but especially the X1 and older X3.

I'm 6'4" and I have plenty of room, for myself. The seat is extended all the way to the rear and in so doing, there is perhaps 2" between the back of my seat and the rear seat cushion. So definitely NOT a 4 passenger vehicle if I'm driving. Kids maybe, but no adults. Not a problem for me, as I'm single, so the X1 is perfect for urban living.

+1
This pretty much sums up my thinking.
Why is this even a thread?
