Why did you swap it out? Was it for the rear fog light emblem on the button???

Probably, but it lacks the chrome trim of more recent models.

Also: wow that was more than six years ago...fun seeing the old parts.

I will swap mine out when I get the new X1 in about a month. I hate seeing blanks in the instrument panel.

When I was took the switch apart last week, I noticed the switch itself was white plastic covered with black paint over it, so it allows the light to past thru. It never brother me with the blank face, because I'm the only driver. You can sand the black paint off, tape over with a vinyl symbol and peel it off after you spray black paint cover it. This is what I did to my friend ‘s Audi window switches at the door because of the wear and tears.

Works great! Took 15 minutes. This will be great here in Florida with our torrential downpours. People go 15 mph and put their hazards on...

had this on my mercedes.
Thanks again!

Where in FL? I moved down here 4 months ago and it hasn't rained much (Thank God). I'll probably hardly ever use the rear FROGS but I wanted to tackle this little project myself.

Edit: I lied as my wife helped me out.

Whenever I have to slow way down below the posted speed limit whether for rain, snow, or other reasons I often use my hazard lights. In some states it is permitted but in others (like Florida) it is not.

Sample language for many states:

"Hazard lights are not permitted except to indicate a traffic hazard or when a hazardous condition is present."

yes, it is illegal in Florida. the use of hazard lights is only for vehicles that are stopped or in funeral procession.

it is my understanding that in the US, although not required, they are legal to use, so this mod is a welcomed safety tool for driving in the heavy rains we get in Florida.

FWIW, I just bought two of these switches used via flea-bay in the UK for cheap. One is not the correct switch module per say to do a complete swap but the the buttons are the correct buttons. As such, rather than trimming the current button I'll swap buttons. Viola fully functional rear fog lights plus the correct graphics. That will make the wife happy to not wonder what the button does. And me too cause I am a bit on OCD side too.

Edit add - I made the switch swap. EZ. And of course the rear fog lights come on and the emblem in dash lights up. However, I had counted on the electronics board being the same as the Euro version. But it is not. The US version does not come with the tiny LED back lighting!! I figured that it did. That said I just used the electronics board from the Euro switch even though it has the leveling function and I have Xenon lights.

Got the second switch and it was the correct switch (front/rear/ fog, rain sensor, xenon) sans the chrome knob. I swapped it and viola correct button and backlighting.

It'll be my first mod on our X1 after picking it up this Thursday.

In winter, with the snow that can accummulate on the back of any vehicle, I've found that LED tail-lights aren't hot enough to melt snow off the tail-light lenses. Having the rear fog lights lit is about the only way to keep some red clearly visible for cars behind. Given that I've been rear-ended twice (four times actually, but only twice with damage and injury), I'm kind of particular about things like visibility.

I had the light switch so modded in our 135i M-Sport Coupe, which is being traded in for the X1, and also have it done on my 1M Coupe.

Given that most American's can't figure out when to use front fog lights, I fully understand that the more dangerous rears are disabled, and I sincerely hope that those of you who do the mod won't turn them on in mild fog, rain or snow, and be extra hesitant to turn them on after sunset.

Can you see more than one car in front of you? Turn off the front fog lights.

Is it pitch black? Turn off the rear fog lights.
I rode behind this Range Rover Evoque tonight in heavy post-Thanksgiving traffic. Rear fogs on. Looked like he was riding his brakes from a mile back. Very bright to ride immediately behind him.

Don't want to hijack the thread but have a similar question to the rear fog switch mod...

I want to activate some of the unused switches in the panel below the DVD slot... The one for the EcoPro, PDC, etc.

I have two unused swithces and was wondering if they can be activated like the head light switch or are the used used switches truly "dummy" ones...

Might post the question in a new thread for more replies but the EcoPro is activating a different part of the control electronics. Now whether that also includes hardware (like the Dinan tune kits) I do not know. Hardware aside the Eco-pro might be there in the firmware but is probably locked out out. So while you might be able to add the switch it will probably not do anything.

Hi Guys!

We just pulled the trigger on a 2014 E84 and I converted our past BMW's to utilize the rear fog lights. Those were done with replacing the light switch itself, since like others have said, I'm also OCD and prefer the "complete" look of a lighted button. The switch for the 2007 E92 was available here in the US but the one for the 2009 E90 was not. Fortunately, we picked it up at the local BMW dealer in Munich when we did ED.

Before trading in the E90, I'm figuring on putting back the original switch and using the rear fog enabled switch in the 2014 E84, since it will match the chrome trim on the dial. I'm anticipating that it won't throw any fault codes but thanks to the OP for a detailed DIY to convert the existing switch if need be. I already have a set of plastic trim tools from when I did the first conversion so accessing the switch should not be an issue.

Appropriate use of rear fog lights in low visibility driving conditions is a valuable safety feature but I do agree that it can be annoying when those that haven't a clue what they're used for, have them on at the wrong times.

Happy New Year to all!

To do so you'd have to have removed the side panel, vent, and many other clips, screws, and fasteners.

This was req'd to install a P3 vent gauge in my 1M, and I don't see much difference in the X1's dash structure.

Don't complicate it more than it needs to be....just pull the vent.
