Rust on 9Months old Canadian X1
Oh my God, my 9 months old X1 has already rust on the muffler.
As a lot of owner knows, the X1 muffler dangs out from the car, and cosmetically ugly. With the addition of these rust, my car doesn't look even like a BMW.... Anyone can has these wearing sign already? It looks like BMW didn't treat that muffler hanger properly at the factory at all. Do you think the dealer will do anything about it? |

I don't know about in Canada, however in the UK at least there is a substantial anti-corrosion warranty - I suggest you raise this ASAP with your dealership.
Interestingly Im pretty sure (though CBA to go look right now) that is a completely different assembly to what I have under my (diesel) car - maybe something specific to do with the North American model? FYI, my wheel hubs were going rusty - after much discussion my dealership cleaned and painted them with BMW footing the bill. As it should do in my view. |

Mine is less than yours but still visible... And the exhaust is big too, gets out of the bumper; rusted looks very bad regardless how nice and clean the car is...
I am already looking to install a stainless steel exhaust system but is nothing out there. Do you guys know a good exhaust for X1 in stainless steel? Last edited by Teutonic; 03-27-2012 at 10:16 PM.. |

Guys, correct me of I'm wrong but isn't the box itself made out of stainless steel? I think most cars are. It almost looks like the welds are rusting which may mean maybe they used a carbon steel weld material instead of a stainless steel weld material.
Simple Test: Put a magnet to it. It it doesn't stick, it's stainless steel. If it sticks, it could be either stainless steel or carbon steel. |

OK... went to the dealer.
They said there's nothing they could do, nothing u could put to prevent it. I'll probably use some CLR to remove the rust and paint the muffler with high temp black matte paint. I'm sure it will look good. |

When is ready post a picture with the new mufler. I am still waiting for some exhaust companies to come up with a fancy stainless steel (smaller) mufler for X1. I have called Eisenmann they don't have anything. Borla has something universal that will fit (so they say) but I don't know how it looks...
