There has been some conflicting word on this one.

Insider rumors from BMW (scott26) still point to a US X1 reveal at the New York Autoshow in April. The fact that the BMW plant in spartanburg has a nice fresh X1 out on the front lawn for display and that people have been seeing X1s driving/testing on US streets certainly helps to confuse the situation.

Regardless, Car and Driver has it on good word that the US X1 launch has been delayed. According to them,

Quote:
"Here’s one tidbit we picked up at the 2011 Detroit auto show: BMW has decided to delay the U.S.-market introduction of the X1 crossover until the fall of this year; the X1’s rollout was originally planned for early 2011. Evidently, the Leipzig, Germany, production plant in which the X1 is built (alongside the 1-series) can barely make enough of them for the European market, and to add the considerable demand of the U.S. market to the production fray is not possible at this point.

How long will we wait for the X1? “Until fall of ’11 at the absolute earliest,” according to BMW spokesman Tom Plucinsky. If you really can’t wait to take a test drive in one, and live somewhere near the Canadian border, the X1 will be in showrooms there early this year as scheduled, according to Plucinsky.

I feel sorry for you guys in the US.

I wondered how BMW could manage to meet the huge demand for the X1 in the existing markets plus the US market without expanding the delivery time. I think that BMW is also surprised by the success of the X1. Just look at the Leipzig factory - I heard that nearly 75 % of the daily capacity is used for the X1! I don't know how they can keep up with the demand this year, because the production of the new 1 series will also need some notable capacity in Leipzig.

I mentioned this on one of the other threads. BMW have been caught out a bit by European demand for the X1. Little birdie says that they have to wait until production moves to India before it can be ramped up to supply new markets.

Down side for me is that eventually there will be lots of them about
Good thing is that BMW may develop more variants

I want a 335d X1 XDrive with the new 8-speed auto box please.....pretty please....Oh and with quad pipes.....please

I think that is called an X3.

Can't get all the goodies in the lowest model of the series.

X3 only available here in a 2.0d, comes with the 8-speed auto though (optional). Had a look at it at my local dealer 3 weeks ago but its too big.

For the X3 we get a 28i or 35i as choices.

I don't see the market in the US for this car at all, Europe definitely. The X3 is already a relatively small SUV and given BMW pricing, this will cost what?? 35-40K

Sounds like the old bad news, good news joke. It really does not effect me as the recent purchase of my 135i takes me out of the car market for a while. I would like to see more diesel engine choices in the US, though. The 335d loaner I drove a few weeks ago really impressed me.

Just throwing this out there - could the delay have more to do with possible changes in the powertrain department scheduled for September? Given the timing of this news vs. the Z4 turbo 4 news, it could be that they are planning to replace the I6 in the X1 28i with the new turbo 4 in September and do not want to bother certifying the I6 in this vehicle for just a few months of production.

Also, I recall spy shots of what some suspected was an X1 35i, but pehaps this was not a turbo 6 at all. Perhaps it was an X1 with the new turbo 4 under the hood.

Anyway, just some speculation for folks to chew on.

The market for this is huge in the US. The new X3 is larger now and does not size well against the many "cute ute" competitors here in the US. Pricing will probably start at 30k, and I believe sales of this vehicle will be very brisk indeed.

I'm not surprised to hear this, doesn't BMW make the least amount of money on the cars it sells here? If this thing is selling like crazy in markets that yield a higher profit, I can't blame them for delaying US launch...

Sad to say, we have to buy a new vehicle before the fall of 2011 and BMW does not have a vehicle in its' current line up that matches our needs of an AWD car with high mileage - but then neither does anyone else - I would lease an Audi or MB if they had the AWD diesel, but buy the X1. The X1 will be a huge hit when it comes to the US. So I'm going to have to buy the other vehicle we need - a truck, and the X1 will have to wait until it's paid off. Not happy, but hope the old 318 makes 350,000 miles - it's well on it's way and still fun on the mountain roads I drive to work. Besides, by the time the truck is paid off, we can get an X1 coming off a 3 year lease for a steal.

Let's see... my crystal ball tells me that it will start right at the middle of the X3 and the Countryman S ALL4 base MSRP with delivery charges, or $32500.

BMW can't help themselves with pricing, they just can't.

Here you can see how the X1 compares in size with an X5 and a previous gen Grand Cherokee. (these pics are from Mexico, where the X1 is doing pretty well too). Sorry for the blurry blackberry pics :/

I saw one on the freeway this weekend in San Diego. I thought nothing of it and just assumed it had launched already. Had I caught this post in time, I would have taken a few pics. BTW, it's not really much to write home about. It's small and kinda awkward looking, in my opinion.

I wonder if it's because they have rushed to release this vehicle and in doing that are beta testing the platform and new technology.

With all of the buy backs/lemon law problems BMW experienced with the HPFP in the N54 in the US, maybe they decided to hold this out of that market for a while.

They can let the early adopters finish the North American testing in Canada, where there is no consumer protection whatsoever.
