I'm pretty sure I tried that, but it didn't work. BTW: This is when I'm driving at highway speeds not while parked.

It works just fine on the 6-speed - I regularly flip back and forth between drive and neutral.

Right, I have done that too on my other BMWs.

I should have been more clear - I have the 8-speed (on the 2.8) and it doesn't work while the car is moving. So the question is - is there a trick to get it into neutral on the 2.8 while the car is moving?

It works fine on my 8-speed. Just push the stick forward (don't have to press the unlock button on the left of the stick) and it goes to N and pull it backward to go back to D. Nothing tricky.

Fairly similar effect to pressing the clutch on a standard.
- It prevents engine braking, i.e. you can roll without losing speed.
- On FWD/AWD vehicles, it improves steering in slippery conditions.
- Gliding saves fuel.

So through all of this conversation, it's still not clear to me that the OP's question was answered. I'm having the same issue with pulling into the garage, stopping, engaging park, and having to restart the engine via the start/stop button before depressing it again and holding to shut it off and turn off the electronics.

It sounds like the only way around this is to pull in, stop moving (engine turns off), engage park, remove foot from the brake (engine starts running), and then press start/stop. Either way it requires starting the engine again to stop the engine, which doesn't seem well thought out.

Please tell me if I'm missing something...

It's my wife's daily driver so I'll have to ask her...however I think taking her foot of the brake after putting it in park "solved" her problem. But I don't know exactly what that means! She may experience the same as you have described. The couple of times I have driven it I have not had an issue with auto-off in the garage but I don't know what I do to make that happen.

Hold the button down if you won't to shut everything down.

Again, missing the point. If the car is stopped and put in park but the ASS has shut off the engine, pressing the start/stop button (for any length of time) only serves to re-start the engine.

After doing a bit of experimenting, it does seem that taking my foot off the break prior to pressring start/stop does function to turn off the electronics. So the process is: pull into garage and brake to a stop, ASS shuts off engine, engage park, apply parking brake, remove foot from brake pedal, press and hold start/stop. Quite the list just to shut off the car!

Tell her to unfasten her seat belt. This will disable auto start the engine ;-)

Or push the park button on the gear selector pressing the break pedal. Like in the good old 6-speed tranny days.

There are so many threads on this subject but as someone said in one of them you don't have to put it in park just hold the button in and it puts it in park.
