My 35i VS. 28i builds, need opinions!!

Now that my 35i build is up to 45 large (need that damn tech package after playing with it for awhile)...I'm once again considering a 28i as I can get it in at 4k cheaper which MAY be worth it, which would you chose:

A) 35i Xdrive Base Line:
Jet Black
Ultimate (premium, tech, driver assist) with black leather, fineline wood
Cold Weather
Sport wheel with paddles
TOTAL: 45,015

B) 28i Xdrive Sport Line:
Jet Black
Black leather with red stitching that I'm not a huge fan of- maybe coral
High gloss black
Cold Weather
Tech Package
Pano Roof
Sport wheel with paddles
TOTAL: 41,045

Notable items missing from 28:
N55 I6 with 300hp/300lb-ft (ouch)
Power seats with memory (don't really care as I'd be driving 90+%)
Xenon lights (won't kill me either)
Rear camera (also not a deal breaker, car's not that big)
Wood trim (do like the look, can't get on a sport line car)
Comfort access (nice, but don't need that either)
Dimming mirrors (want the interior one, don't want exterior ones)

28i advantages:
Better fuel mileage
Latest 8s quick shifting tranny
Sport seats and better looking wheels (like 323 wheels on 35i but can't due to staggered performance tires that I actually don't want for winter)
Reason I can justify sport line on 28 is don't have to spend 600 on wheels and another 500 on wood trim- gloss black is ok and sport line wheels are nicer and the seats which I like alot)

Drive both and see if the engine difference is compelling enough to forego the wheels seats. If you are looking to save money and fuel, the 28 is a better value, but if you want to out accelerate most cars and do while enjoying a good engine note, get the 35.

You can decrease the price gap if you are willing to accept these compromises:

Are you choosing the Premium on the 35 for the roof and leather? I think they can be had as an indiv option for less, but maybe not much less...

You can still choose the Lighting Pkg for the Xenons on the 28.

For $400 or $1200 you can have 35/45 more HP/TQ. So.... 28i.

Having a 2012 135i, I recently test-drove a X1 28.

I just ordered the X1 35 to replace the wife's X3. Why?

While the N20 in the 28 was peppy, the N55 in my 135i ALWAYS puts a smile on my face!

From your list of things missing, aside from the engine, the Xenon's and the auto-dimming mirrors (kinda like rain-sensing wipers) are like oxygen. You really don't notice them until you don't have them. Then you really miss them.

I did drive them both and I was impressed with the little 2 liter but I think I may have been grading it on a curve- inner monologue: for 2 liters of displacement it does get down the road smartly and is the more fuel efficient, cost effective option. After I drove the 35 I kinda forgot about fuel economy and I was grinning until I had to put it back. That said, an 80 mile commute getting low 20s mpg (like our old Forester XT did) does start to sting a little. If the claimed 27 hwy is real world attainable I'd be fine with that, but I'm thinking that's uber optimistic for all but Gordon Lightfoot.

Yeah, the best I've had on highway trips is 24 mpg, but of course, that is at bat-out-of-hell speed (and with DCT). Perhaps if you drafted semi's for the entire commute...

Everyone has their boxes that have to be checked, and honestly BMW made it difficult for us in the U.S. with how the two models spec out and what the packages are.

I'll be driving both engines hopefully this week to compare power, but I already know my wife and I would prefer the 35i (it would be her DD). The real question is, can live with and enjoy the 28i.

The things that I know we have to have at a minimum are:
1) leather
2) wood trim
3) pano roof
4) heated seats
5) metallic paint
6) xenons (without adaptive whatever or ambiance)

That puts us in
xDrive28i with premium/lighting packs plus heated seats at $39,945
xDrive35i with cold weather pack at $41,895

That's not a whole lot of price difference. I think you've spec'd out two very different builds and you should probably figure out what you have to have, and build from there.

They are different, this was my best attempt at creating a big enough price gap that the somewhat austere 28i build would look enticing to me by omitting features I don't think I'd miss too much. I surely could live without the 2500 tech also but I listen to my ipod in the car a lot and finding things with the idrive interface is way easier and way nicer looking- doesn't wash out with polarized sunglasses either...

you can meet your minimum requirements w/o the Premium Pkg if you slect the leather and Pano roof as individual options.

+1 on the gas mileage difference btwn the 28 and 35. Real world difference will be greater than the EPA estimates.

As to the fuel economy, try playing around with Eco Pro mode. On a recent test drive I was able to achieve 34mpg (indicated). It's been my experience that the instruments in a BMW are fairly accurate (other than the speedo), but I've never compared consumption on a car with Eco Pro.

Weird thing on my 2013 X1s drive was when I picked it up the window sticker says the EPA rating is 34 hwy verses the 33 reported on reviews. That's the same as my Clubman S and the X1 is a lot bigger and faster. If you don't care about gas mileage go for the 35 but for me it was a pretty big factor because you know in 3 years it will be $5 a gallon. I own E93 335 manual so my wife didn't need the bigger engine, if it was my only car it might be different.

I have a 135i and love the N54 with the manual 6-speed. But quite honestly it's overkill, which I really enjoy. Test drove an X3 with the N20 and 8-speed auto. It's an awesome combo. And perfect for the wife. But get the xenons or you'll be kicking yourself. We got the X28i with M sport package, all the goodies and it rang up at $45K.
