Break in and oil consumption

While BMW says no break in is required and fills with synthetic oil from the get-go for most of their cars they do recommend " break in oil" for the M cars, changing to synthetic at 1,200 miles. I also understand that BMW says that consuming a quart of oil every 750 miles is still " Normal".

Has anyone experienced high oil usage?

I am thinking of draining the synthetic as soon as I get my car (leaving the filter in place) and replacing it with Dino oil for the first 1,500 miles. Then I would change the filter and change back to synthetic oil. The idea would be to help the rings seat better.

What do you think?

If you do that you will possibly invalidate the warranty, if for example the engine had a problem while that dino oil is in it you would have an issue.
I would follow the BMW recommendation. They make thousands/millions of cars and do massive amounts of testing and likely know what's best for a new car/new engine regarding performance/longlevity and reliability.

IMO of course

I bought a demo model, 4000km on the clock, 5000km later it has not used any oil, 2.0D x drive. No break in procedure would have been used, and no issues since I had it.

A quart every 750 miles !?!?! No way. Perhaps every 7500 miles. In all my years, my BMWs have never burnt that much oil.

I think switching to dino for break-in is overkill. When was the last time you heard of someone retiring a BMW due to an engine failure related to oil lubrication?
