Wheel Gap Measurement

Can current owners measure the wheel gap on their X1s? Please let me know if it's a M-Sport, Sport or Standard. (From fender to top of tire)

I don't have an official answer....but from what I've read the ride height does not vary. The M package reportedly has a firmer suspension, but is not lower than the others....

Yes I know, I just wanted to confirm that. Also wanted to make sure I pick the correct springs for the X1. Since there are no springs yet; I'll be going with 328i wagon springs.

I read someone said that M is 10mm lower and I hand measure a M vs the X line at the dealer and the M does lower very little.

Keep in mind the 328i wagon is an old i-6 engine which is heavier than the N20 engine; if you use that spring on X1 it may sit higher.

Both models weigh the same.

s28i X1 weight = 3527 lb
Length = 108.7"
Height = 60.5"

328i wagon weight = 3527 lb
Length = 108.7"
Height = 56.8"

It's most accurate to compare ride (spring) height by measuring the gap between the bottom of the fender to the wheel center (or an ref pt on the wheel) to eliminate any differences in tire height / inflation pressure.

Comparing such numbers should be taken loosely since the precision of measuring that dimension by different people is very low. For example do you measure straight down from the fender and perpendicular to the wheel or do you put your measuring tape at an angle to touch both surfaces?

I'll gladly post my xLine numbers FLft and RLft.

so I took rough estimates using a rigid tape measure and measured a vertical straight line from the lowest point of the fender directly to the center of the wheel hub. The line angled a bit inward to get to the whee hub, but not enough to calc the difference if were to have measured to a point perpendicular to the wheel center. The tanks was empty and no passengers.

Front Left 16 3/8"
Rear Left 16 1/2" I suspect it will drop 1/8" if I fill the tank.

Can someone with an M Sport help by posting their measurements? Thanks.

Rather than attempt to measure the wheel gap, I just measured the fender height since the tire diameters are essentially the same. Front is 28-3/8", rear is 28-1/2". The measurement was taken at wheel centerline directly above the highest point of the tire.

So can you match bimmerized measurement method, to see the differences?

Regardless, thanks very much.

Looks like 16-1/8" front, 16-1/4" rear. So unscientifically speaking, there is a small difference. Looks to be a little less than the 10mm speculated elsewhere. But keep in mind the different fender flares could have an impact on the measurements. Ultimately, getting the overall vehicle height would tell us for sure, but I certainly don't have the ability to do that - at least not in the garage.

why not just measure as I did? Tire diameters are NOT exactly the same if you have the 19" or staggered option, plus inflation pressure pressure as well as tire wear comes into play.

I believe the fender flares are the same in all models it's only that in the M Sport they are in body color.

...I just went out and measured as you did and got exactly the same numbers so, THERE IS NOT ONE MM DIFFERENCE in height btwn the Standard and M Sport suspensions. There, done, period.

And you both have the 28i models too. I wonder if the 35i is a bit lower (by bit I mean not much) in the front.

Thanks Bimmerized and HotRod. I think a 1.9 and 1.4 drop will be fine. I was thinking it might be too low; but I think that would look fine.

I already measured your way, too, as noted above. And yes, the tire diameters are essentially the same. Identical? No, but close enough that BMW doesn't have a problem using 17", 18" or 19" wheels interchangeably without affecting the speedo. (Not that it should matter since apparently BMW speedometers are more of a guideline than actual speed measurement anyway.) As long as you "minus-size" the tires correctly by adjusting the aspect ratio, the overall tire diameter remains very close.

Endless,

This is your X1 then right? http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s...4506796&type=1

I saw on Bimmerfest forums; it's lowered 3"? I was hoping the Eibach Sportline springs would lower the car to have the same look as yours but @ 1.9 and 1.4, I don't think it's going to look that low. Maybe if I go with 328i coupe / sedan springs instead of the wagon; that might help lower a bit more...

No rubbing issues at that level? I really don't think 1.9 will be enough.

It would have to be higher not to rub without fender work to run these offsets for sure.

Ah I see. So for the photo shoot, you lowered the KWs. Then when you drive off, you raise them a bit. So when you are driving what's the wheel gap measurements then? 26 inches or so?

So your fenders are rolled and/or you are running spacers? Otherwise, like you said, you would have rubbing issues correct?
