Max Oil Temp when Driving for Hours

So I haven't really given this much attention because I'm still so excited driving this car since I got this in March this year. But yesterday, I was driving straight 3 hours on a stop and go traffic and happen to get bored and ended up staring at my oil temp on the instrument cluster.

My gauge is from 160-340ºF with 250ºF in the middle. I noticed the needle to be fixed at 240ºF. Is this normal? My e84 is full stock if that even matter.

I haven't noticed anything wrong but was just wondering if that's a normal temp for this car since I read generally (no specific makes), oil temps range from 190-220ºF. TIA

Yes 240 is normal. I have found that the oil temps in these cars are a little higher than the industry average. I have the MHD sport cooling targets on my 335i (same engine) and oil temps are normally 210-220 which is where I would like to see them. Once it starts to surpass 250 I would be looking for ways to keep it cooler. I believe BMW put limp mode at 270 or 275.

I only see water temp on my X1 s28i, since I use OBDII Scangauge II.

First time I watched it I thought my engine was over heating.

When I ran the A/C which is most of time car ran with 215 deg f coolant.

The rare day I ran with no A/C, the engine controls the electric water pumpt, and runs temp up to 236 deg F.

Also, using Eco-Pro button it runs up temps.

So, that's another way BMW gets more power and efficiency.

Just use a good oil for hot running German cars: Mobil 1 0w40 or Castrol Edge 0w40.

Just put a temp gauge on your BMW, and see for yourself.

You can be cruising fine for a while with temp of 215 f, then, turn on Eco-Pro, and numbers pretty much immediately start climbing up to 234 or 236.

Any throttle input starts running it back down.

It's really sort of brilliant.

When you are not loading excess heat into engine by working hard, it can stand to add more inside for more efficiency.

When I drive at limit on track temp goes back down to around 209.

That Eco-Pro is dangerous, since to use it turns on ASS.

I don't use ASS because I can barely feel my legs having Muscular dystrophy (CMT type mild).

So, I was testing Eco-Pro, and when I got to drive up window car shut off, and it runs so quiet I didn't even notice.

My foot barely slipped enough to restart, and I tried to brake, but I was also giving gas as I did.

I had to throw emergency brake to stop, and wife is going" what the hell's going on?".

I did get me a MOMO brake stick , and now I have instant brake with left hand, and normal throttle with right numb leg.

Maybe the 4cyl is different - my 6cyl pins @ 240-250F oil temp constantly once warmed up, regardless of Eco-Pro.

Irrelevant fact for those interested: I hit 285-290F on the track after 10-15min, but it drops right back down to 250 after a cooldown lap.

I think its different on the 35i. I haven't used Eco-Pro intentionally but couple of times, I didn't know that I accidentally hit the button and activated it. 35i doesn't have ASS so I think Eco-Pro on the 6cyl is mainly on air-conditioning etc.

You can switch off ASS in eco pro for x28i drivers.
IIRC eco pro basically lowers the draw of accessory electricals and retuned the tranny. There's a doc called X1 Complete Vehicle that mentions eco pro. No mention of oil temps.

Maybe it runs a leaner fuel map leading to hotter higher EGTs and people thinks it is running a hot engine. Although in general turbo EGTs are normally lower than NA cars. You should see the temps for a rotary engine. Poor cats.

I'm watching water coolant temps with a Scan gauge II.

Temp rises so quick, I thought I had a stuck thermostat when I first saw temps go from 215 to 236.

Just touching gas causes it to start back down.
