Why is BMW doing this?

I was checking the X1 specifications and came across some strange things:
sDrive 20d is manual only - why?? This really sucks.
23d is xDrive only - again why? I would love 23d 2WD

And why there are only 4 cylinder diesels anyway? Why they didn't launch the car with very popular 30d engine?

Because i would cannibalize other models in the lineup, such as the X3.

i wish i could test drive any diesel x1 but i don't know when the US will ever get it
