Is there a Way to Tell between 28xi and 35xi
This may seem silly, but I tend to look at other X1's when driving and besides the trim molding on the door(which is small at hard to read at 50mph), is there a definitive way to tell which model they have?
A black one went flying through an intersection the other day, and it sounded amazing. And while I presume it was a 35xi, I certainly couldn't read the door trim. |

For the most part, only the 35i's have Xenons/Angel Eye headlights. I think it was a limited time option for 28's so they're out there but very rare
Conversely, there are early early build 35i's that didnt come with xenons |

I almost never drive at night so I got the stock halogens.
I don't have trouble seeing at night, and either type can be over driven onto crap on the road if you speed. |

When shopping around for our X1 I noticed a lot of 28i's with angel eyes. I'm not sure if it's different in the US but in Canada it wasn't a rarity. Granted, a much larger portion of 35i's had angel eyes but I imagine that had to do with buyer preferences in somewhat different categories as opposed to and availability issues

The 35i was only sold in the north american market, so I think they skimped a bit on differentiation of the two models. In particular, they did not bother to do the dual exhaust that all 35s have in other models. I think every option available on the 35i could be added onto the 28i, and often were. I don't think they even have a unique rim, other than all 35i's have at least 18 inch wheels, while only some 28i's do.
Update- using realOEM, it does look like the 35 and 28 models have different tailpipe tips. They have different part numbers, with the 28 listed as "alu-look" and weighing .120 kg, and the 35i ones listed as Black Chrome and weighing .180 kg. These are shared with the 1 series 35i coupe and convertible. The 28i ones are shared with the n20 z4. So, there you go. If you see the slightly larger and darker tailpipe tips, it's a 35i. |

35i have all the premium packages by default (mine was a base model but has everything I wanted). Otherwise.... power? ;-)

But yeah, the only real way is with the darker/slightly larger tips on the 35 as far as I can tell.
