So who is lying? N-20 Timing Chain

Spoke to two different service advisors at BMW of Las Vegas and one told me yes the timing chains gaurds can be an issue and they were replacing one on a 6 cylinder which cost over $7,000. The other advisor told me he he has only seen one chain failure on a 8 cylinder engine and the n20 he has never seen a catastrophic Engine failure or timing Chain. He has been with BMW for years. He claims the n20 has proven a reliable engine.

They did tell me mine was part of the one extended to 70,000 miles which would provide me little comfort but thank God I purchased the extended unlimited mileage coverage for 4 years.

I just started reading this forum, and it seems like you are repeating yourself a lot, and also complaining quite a bit about BMW.

Please simmer down.

Plenty of time to sell X1 with n20, if it scares you.

Don't get a used Honda.

Some of them would slice your neck with faulty airbag.

Some of the Lexus would accelerate on own, and no way to brake or turn off BUTTON.

Nearly all cars have some design defects.

I don't fear my X1 s28i, but will watch the chain for looseness.

Where is the contradiction (implied by "Who is lying?")? The n20 isn't a 6 or 8 cyl engine. And are they covering just the part, or any other repairs, like replacing valves, due to a failure of the chain guard?

Not to carry this on further, but looking at North America build numbers and making an educated guess at a failure rate (my background is as a Failure Analysis Engineer) I'm estimating there have been well under 100 of these failures in total.

It's easy to see where with this quantity a given dealer could easily have never seen a car with this problem.

Don't drive like an idiot. Avoid prolong oil change intervals. Long hwy drives burns of carbon buildup. Hakuna Matata on.

Well technically if your in 3rd gear doing 70 for an hour or so, might knock it down a little.

What's your opinion on the "italian tuneup" of driving at high RPM (near redline) for 10-20 minutes? Outside of needing an additional oil cooler to keep oil temps low.

I've done this for two stroke dirtbikes to "self hone" some new rings in my younger years lol. Not on a car though.

Iirc vw has/had a tsb for performing something like this when the tfsi engines came out on the mkvi gti's in the US to burn carbon out.

I think it's a great idea. Warm it up first then go for it.

That's my plan for preventing carbon buildup issues on these DI motors, btw.

I've also been happy with that approach for breaking in engines. Did it with n52, n54, n55 and s55 and have not had any oil consumption with those motors at the track
