I would assume DOT 4 or 5.1 (not 5).

If you look at the reservoir of the brake fluid. It will say that you need DOT 4. Also under the hood on top of the radiator there is an 800 number that you can call and they will tell you that information also, plus anything else related to your vehicle. If you have less than 50 k or 4 years just drive it in and let them top it off. If your brake system needs fluid you might want them to check it out. It is a closed system and should not be low unless there is a leak.

Thanks. I did not even open the reservoir as it's clearly full! i checked the pads and from what I see, without removing the calipers, they appear to have a good deal of wear left.

Any idea why it's throwing codes in regards to brake wear?

Look at the vehicle status screen in your command center if you do not have one then the center screen on your dash, just scroll through the menus until you reach the service screen. There is a mileage or time status for the brake fluid. Maybe this is what is occurring. Could you be a little more specific on what the warning is. Low fluid or brake pad wear. One is the sensor for the reservoir cap the other for the pad sensor. You are up in Canada and corrosion might be a issue with your connection.

BMW calls for a fluid flush every 2 years.

It's saying both, pad wear and brake fluid but both look fine.

The brake fluid in the reservoir always looks the best. The contaminants(dirty fluid) collects at the lowest point of the system...the calipers. Schedule a service and let BMW change your brake fluid and inspect the pad wear. Worry not.

BTW, as pads wear down the caliper pistons move out of the caliper and the space created in the caliper from the outward moving pistons is taken up by brake fluid. Consequently, the fluid level in the reservoir WILL drop over time...as pads wear down.

Any objections to my thoughts of not taking this to BMW and taking it to an independent? My reasoning being that BMW will push for new parts as the lease is due for return soon, an indy is likely to be more honest. I trust my indy, been with him 10 years.

If you have a lease shouldn't you still be under warranty?

It was part of my service agreement on the factory warranty. Just call the dealer and ask.
