I guess I should start this off by explaining my mentality and situation. My first Bmw was a 1986 325e e30 I bought in high school(96)from my dads friend. Timing belt snapped. Bought an engine($350) from a rollover I found at a local wrecking yard and was driving a bmw in high school in grade 11. 2006 ish my buddy had a friend who took out a loan for her then boyfriend to buy a 2002 325i. He crashed it and she had to pay to fix it and ran out of money. I bought it off her by paying out the loan and fixing the botched repair. My aunt bought a 1993 318i in 93 and it had been parked in her garage for years due to a major oil leak. She wanted to sell the house around 16yrs back . So I inherited that. Turned out to be a timing chain cover and oil filter housing gasket I had a shop do which never sealed right so bought a motor($250) and had it swapped.
Next was maybe 15 years ago I bought a crashed 02 325xi replaced headlight, fender and bumper and car was good to go. Last Bmw was an 06 325xi with 306ish km about 8 yrs ago. Wouldn't start. Mechanic determined it was an eccentric shaft needing to be calibrated if I recall fixed sub $200 Roll forward to recent times id been driving a low mileage to me Audi A4 wagon. 110,000kms and didn't wanna change the timing belt so I sold it. Bought a newer a4 and preventatively did the timing chain on that $2k. Issue is I now miss the space in the hatch and moving to a sedan sucks. So the hunt for a wagon began. I was leaning towards a q5 but stumbled on this lil car in a classified ad 23 hours north for cheap without any photos attached. December 2020 car is listed to be running with 280,000kms and burning oil and would need a timing chain replacement and broken windshield. I paid $2700 canadian. 2012 X1 X-line 2.8 xdrive with navigation. I still have my a4 so the bimmer is to sit until I find a shop to repair it for a reasonable price. I don't mind wrenching but intricate jobs are not for my heart. Want me to swap a motor no problem. Want me to replace a camshaft. No chance. So after interviewing a few shops and comparing prices to what I paid on my audi. I decided on a shop just north of Toronto. I'm in Niagara Falls and had the car towed in. Parts list was given to me : valve cover gaskets , timing cover gaskets, oil pan gaskets, oil pump chain tensioner and guides, timing chain tensioner, chain and guides, 4 spark plugs. Walnut blast carbon clean. Parts and labour $2049.92. Well worth it IMO. My mentality is I could buy an X1 for 7500 which is what they're selling for without the nav and have 100k less mileage but on original chain and I wouldn't be able to sleep at night. I personally rather buy an older one at a reduced price needing work and get the work done. So that's what I did and here we are

Some updated photos. Will get better pics of the guides. This car ran and drove fine with the death rattle at start up and burning oil
