how do you manage potholes and bad conditions roads?
Hi. My just picked last friday my X1 M package with 225/45 R18 wheels at front and 255/40 R18 at rear. Even the standard X1 wheels measure is 225/50 R17. I come from a RAV4 with R17 225/65 and even tough I really love my X1 I find hard to believe that BMW think you can do "off road" or even "all road" with the X1 with those wheels measures or am I wrong?
I mean, compared to my former RAV4 I find the wheels on my X1 are so fragile that even the slight pothole could do serious damage to my wheels/tires and suspensions. Do you think the same or am I exagerating? How have your experiences being with your X1 managing potholes, bumps and such? Is the X1 suspension (I don't know if the X1 M package sports suspensions is way more different) very fragile too that even by doing roads in bad conditions tough not potholes can harm that suspension? Excuse my ignorance but this is THE ONLY thing that concerns me about my X1 and as I haven't had much experience with such low profiles tires I have these doubts. Thanks! P.S. I did have one low profile car before -a MB C230K- but sold it after 3 months of use and got my former RAV4. |

Stay on road? I've had proper off road vehicles and bought the X1 with the idea of no dirt roads at all. Especially MSport (lower, less deformable plastic undercarriage). Suspension can be replacedOk, but you don't want to crack chassis attachment points or create unsolvable rattles in the thing. Permanent all wheel drive is just good for traction, not rough stuff. Put your head under the car and see what's vulnerable too.

I understand your point AUSX1 and I would never pretend to use my car in off-roads like I would with a Toyota 4Runner BUT what I am questioning is that the X1 ground clearance is even lower than some sedans like the Honda Accord! As much as I love the X1 I wish it had the option to use R16 or even R17 wheels with sizes like 235/60 or 225/60 like the new X3 allows.

It is the tyres, I bet you have run flats on.
Put some proper tyres on and it rides like a completely different car, I got them to swap the 18's on mine for some 17's they had on another car as the 17's come with real tyres in the UK. |

Only other place I have been “offroad” is in Africa and there I would pretty much stick to a Toyota Hilux/Landcruiser type of vehicle.

Good recommendations thanks. What do you think about the M sport suspension that comes with the M package X1? I know several people in this forum have this version. Is this M suspension as strong and durable as the "regular" o "standard" suspension? I can feel every bump and irregularity on the road with my M pack suspension and I love it but don't know if this suspension is more fragile or prone to cause more steering wheel misalignment?
