I'd pick the i8 without hesitation. The leading edge will always have a smaller following. This shows in the majority picking the R8.
What the i8 represents most members here cannot appreciate as yet based on the responses. Give it a few years when more cars like this are made. That being said, everyone is entitled to their opinions and diversity is a good thing.

Cannot appreciate, or simply understand, in the here and now, the R8 is still the vastly superior super car? That's the category. Let's not make this a "oh they just don't get it." Whether you believe the i8 represents a wave of the future or not, they're branding it as a super car, and surely understand in that realm, it's not that super, by comparison, just yet. I can very easily and intelligently say I do love the i8 and what they're trying to do with it. But it's no comparison right now, today, here where the question was asked...

Sorry BMW, while I love the concept if the i8 and thing we're moving in the right direction ala "cutting edge" technology, if I had to pick today it would be the R8

I much prefer BMW over Audi but I do not like the i8 whatsoever.

Audi engine sounds 100% vs the processed i8. No comparison: V10 thank you.

Unless the world bans the selling of gasoline, it has to be the V10 petrol engine and I have never been a fan of Audi in any forms. Sigh...

I8 for a daily. R8 for fun.

Forced to choose one, then R8 for sure.

But I wouldn't imagine cross shopping those two - completely different purposes

What actually represents i8? At the moment it's a hybrid supercars let's say. Petrol engine + electric engine.
Well from what i know, McLaren P1 has the same "arhitecture" and it is sh*t loads faster and more beautiful than i8, the same story with Porsche 918 vs i8.

To be honest i don't understand the purpose of the i8. It's not full electric like a Tesla, it doesn't have a powerfull petrol engine like P1, 918, LaFerrari.

I don't know how this car will represent the future since other car makers are into this game long before i8 and they are playing their role better

Just my 2 cents...

PS: i am a car fan, i own several bmw's, i am waiting for a new one.

This.

The new R8 looks to me like a sausage factory Audi on steroids. The previous gen looked very different to the rest of the range and quite special. This no where near as good, and could be the front of any Audi were it not for the front bumper. I was really disappointed when it was unveiled. The TT looks a bit better in my view.

Roll on M and i and whatever crazy car they have lined up next, preferably with a V8 or i6 in it.

I think the source you linked has made an erroneous estimation. The current R8 V10 starts at $153,900 and V10+ at $173,500. I highly doubt seeing a $30K & $40K increase. Let's wait until Audi releases actual pricing before making price point comparisons. My assumption would be that the new R8 pricing stays within a couple percent of the current model. By the way, the only i8 currently available within 200 miles of where I live is used with 2500 miles and the dealer is asking $168,000 for it. I can buy a current generation used R8 V10 for $140K all day long.

Take a look at my post. I simply won't pick the i8 based on looks inside and out. I don't care what it represents. In my subjective view it's 50% Disney monorail tram 50% 90s Subaru SVX.
