What tint film to use?

Hi all.

Once I get my X1 I will need windows tinted. Which brings up a question - what kind of film to use? I have heard that many car manufacturers today make windows from multi-layered glass to reduce road noise. Not sure if it is true with BMW though. But who knows. Mercedes does it. The issue is that with certain films the heat builds up in that kind of glass and it cracks.

Any input, please post it here.
Thanks

I am planning to use 3M Crystalline film. My parents have it on their F30 and the heat rejection is incredible (I've used Formula 1 ceramic in the past).

Is it scratch resistant with lifetime warranty?

Both 3M and Formula 1 films have lifetime warranties I believe. Visit their website for full details.

Any idea how much crystalline would cost for all 5 windows?

BTW, here is a link to dual layer glass warning:

I got Huper Optik nano-ceramic. It rejects 70% of sun's heat. Looks great, one of the best if not the best out there. For all 5 windows it cost me $350, well worth the extra cost over other brands

I second this...I got mine done for $280 and the gal was surprised by the $20.00 tip. Haven't had my X1 long enough for the heat test but it's got to be better than the crap I had on my Golf and Audi Q5.

One more question. How you can tell if the tinter installed the one you want and not the cheap one. I know 3M puts a logo (which can be removed). What about others?

Just a FYI about those metalic tints, they do not work well with radar detectors so if you plan to use a detector you need to get a non metalic tint.

I have never had issues with metallic tint and the V1 over years and various cars

Same here, but I have used Huper Optik ceramic on the wife's 1er and X1.

Good advice. Crystalline and Ceramic tints are non-metallic and don't interfere.

Yeah still not sure what I'm putting on the X1, paid an arm & leg for ceramic on the GTR and I was not impressed that it was any more effective then llumar metallic. Perhaps I'll try the crystalline

It seems to have slightly better heat prevention than the metallic tint, I think I had Llumar on my M Coupe. It's not a big difference though, both are quality.

I have Llumar Platinum metallic with Llumar Air on the front of both my 135i and X1. No problems with V1 either.

Pic of 135i (taken by installer - they do great work)

The Crystalline has better heat rejection than Ceramic.

You live in Orange County, who cares?

We didn't tint the 1ers windows while we lived there, only once we came here.

Most of our relatives live in the San Gabriel Valley and Inland Empire where it hits 100-110!

I have Crystalline 70 on the front windows, tint is barely visible and about equivalent to panoramic moonroof tint but still good heat rejection. Crystalline 40 all around the back (CA law doesn't allow front window tint but 70 is light enough to skate by). My parents have 70 on the windshield of their 328i. I thought about it but I don't like it on overcast days. I can't find a dealer that carries 90.

Crystalline tint is not pimp/limo by any stretch, but maintains a very classy look IMO.
