Cupholder for mobile phone

I am no a drinker when driving X1 and I don't need a cupholder anyway, but I need a holder for my phone. Here is my solution:
1. Take away the upper part, image 1
2. Remove the 3 torx screws, take away the upper part image 2
3. Fix a holder for your phone on the base of the cupholder image 3
4. Ready! Image 4+5.

Cupholder gone?

I have just recieved my MY11 X1 (with storage pack) and that cupholder is gone! No place for one on the console either.

It should be located in the storage box under the armrest between the frontseats. If it is not there I suggest you contact your BMW car dealer.

I will ask them. As I said I wonder if there has not been a change as I do have a cupholder in the armrest but its built in. Also the centre console has no place to slot it into. I will try and find out.

Has anyone sourced a US-based retailer that sells a similar Universal Phone holder?
This is EXACTLY what I'm looking to do for my 2013 X1.

I think the clip-on cupholder is only for cars with a passenger seat on the right, and only for newer models. Likely, the cup holder situation did not work for the American market, where it's unthinkable not to offer passengers a holder for their supersized soda or milk shake. So the bastard clip-on was introduced.

I guess your passenger has to hold her Irn-Bru in her hand, or use closed mugs/bottles with the diagonal cup holder in the door.

Amusing, especially the Irn-Bru comment. I LOL'd at that

In my opinion the standard cupholder can hold your phone without mods...in fact it holds my phone perfectly, that's where I leave it!

Will it hold a large smartphone like a Samsung Galaxy Note 3? And if you want to view your entire phone screen (for navigation for example), doesn't the cupholder "cage" obscure your view of the screen?

Jump to conclusions much? Equating having a cellphone holder to using a cellphone while driving is like saying since I have a knife I'm using it for stabbing someone....

Don't get me wrong, I abhor people who text and drive, and feel the same way about people who don't make a cell call with a handsfree device. However there are valid reasons to have a cellphone holder and mount.

I have had a cellphone holder in all of my cars in the last 8-10 years. I need a safe location to plugin my phone so that it can charge and not slide around all over the car. Having the screen viewable also allows the phone to be used as a nav device in vehicles that don't have built-in nav. I've also had cars that had bluetooth but didn't show the CallerID. Having the phone visible allows one to see who the incoming call is from so that one can decide to pull off the road to take or return the call.

cell phone holder

I bought a cell phone holder that clips onto the center right vent . I use it for my Galaxy 5 phone and it sits nicely, does not rattle , easy to take on and off and allows me a good view.

Cupholder perfect for my iphone. I wish the center armrest storage area wasn't so useless.

Implemented my solution for a phone holder today. I used the OP's idea of reusing parts of the cupholder. I purchased a spare cupholder off of ebay and removed the top hoop as shown in the original post.

Next I purchased a mounting disk off of Amazon that attaches with 2 sided 3M tape.

Mounting disk

I attach the disk to the bottom via the 3M tape.

I also had an iOttie phone holder that I've had a couple of years and attached it to the disk.

iOttie Phone Mount

Here is the final result:

Thanks for the DIY and pics. I have an iOttie too so I may do the same thing.

There are phone holders that fit armrest cupholders, but I don't know if they will hold inside the removable ones...

Or, get a small section of PVC pipe (with cap on one end) from someplace like Home Depot, stick it in the cup holder and voila a place to suction cup your device
