N20 engine malfunction light

Folks,

I'm new to this forum. I have a 2012 X1 xdrive28i with 19,000kms on it. I've had the car for a year with no issues whatsoever until this weekend.

On a road trip i was on the engine lost significant power and this Engine Malfunction Loss of Power code appeared. I turned off the engine and waited, restarted and the code cleared and all was fine. Upon my return home the code appeared 3 more times.

I do have an appt scheduled for Monday. Has anyone here experienced this and what came from it?

Cheers

Not really, maybe check your gas cap.

I also watch the other forums with the same engine and haven't seen any "common" reasons for any engine errors. There have been very few reports of problems so far.

Fuel injector? A few have reported problems with those.

Check with your local auto parts store and see if they will read the codes for you, it won't tell you a bad part per se (unless a gas cap) but it will give the code(s) for whatever malfunctions it saw.

Thought I'd update you all. Looks like the turbo wastegate system failed. It's a fairly extensive job but its under warranty. They gave me a 2012 3 series loaner which is quite nice.

This is now the second one I've heard of going bad...

I had the same issue today, the engine was very jerky and the whole car was shaking when idling. Got an appointment friday for a checkup (not related to this)

What is the turbo wastegate issue some have complained about?

Had this problem several times since then. They replaced the injectors under warranty and later they replaced the spark plugs ahead of the maintenance schedule. It still isn't solved, had it several times after that. Car is running on 3 or 2 cylinders, depends.
But it does really suck, it only happens with WOT and it happenned twice while I was driving on the Nurburgring

To add more info on this. I checked my CEL codes yesterday because of the downpipe. I had 2 wastegate codes hidden in there. They didn't cause the light to go off, but they were there nonetheless.

The codes I had were for wastegate learning: open too far and one just said fault. I also had MAF: too much air because of my aFe intake and of course, cat efficiency too low from the downpipe.

Only the downpipe caused the engine light to come on, but those two wastegate codes concern me. I'm counting the days until my wastegate pukes.

I'll try to post a picture of my print out when I find the piece of paper.

Twix,

What should we expect if we feel that maybe the wastegate is going on us? Slower response, lack of power at a specific rpm range? I'm asking because I have been having high pitch sounds coming from the turbo and have been concerned. I'm not sure if this is just me or it is something that maybe on te way out.

Thanks

Possible bucking during high RPM shifts. That's about all we (tuning co and myself) have discovered. I have no felt loss in power or slower throttle response.

Hey guys - wanted to resurrect this thread.

Last month my wife's X1 (N20) went into limp mode/reduced engine power a few times, so we brought it into the dealership. They diagnosed it as a faulty wastegate actuator and replaced it under warranty (17,500 mi). They told me the cause could have been brought on by "spirited driving". My wife drives like a little old lady. When I drive it, on occasion, I do lay into it a little bit, maybe passing on the highway or coming up an on-ramp, but I'm not banging it off the rev-limiter or anything.

Since the repair, it just doesn't feel the same. We just got back from a 500-mi. round trip and it seems like there's a lack of mid-range grunt. I have to press the accelerator down further in order to accelerate at the same rate, in any gear, as I did before the repair.

Has anyone experienced this? Could the dealer have recoded the computer or uploaded some sort of an output-reducing software in order to avoid a relapse?

Thanks for any input.

The dealer wouldn't install power reducing software. It's probably placebo effect. Could also be the trans re-learning your driving habits which can take awhile.

N55 is the 35i, N20 is the 28i. Although in Europe and ROW, the 28i used to be the N52 N/A 6 before late 2011. 2012, all 28i models are powered by the N20/N26 depending on your state's emission laws. The N55 has always been in the 35i variant.

Hello everyone,

Bringing this thread back from the abyss.

My 2012 X1 xDrive28i keeps giving me an engine misfire. I've made the terrible mistake of taking it to BMW… they told me it was possibly the charge pressure sensor and charged me $900.

Much to my dismay, on my way home from BMW I got the engine misfire warning again. I did some digging when I got home and I'm thinking it's a problem with my vacuum pump or solenoid. You can see oil on the plugs (please see attached pic).

Can anyone advise me on what to do here? Has anyone encountered the same problem? I have no idea if I should get a new vacuum pump as well as solenoids or just the non return valve that supplies the waste gate actuator. I've also seen 'N20 vacuum pump repair kits' such as this:
https://www.ebay.ca/itm/313486047919...#38;media=COPY

I heard that some n20's have an actuator and some are electronic. Does it matter which one I have?

Thank you in advanced.

If you are referring to the wastegate. At a certain point in the N20 engine lifecycle, BMW switched to a EWG (electronic waste gate). I think yours might still be the pressure type. You can punch your VIN in realoem.com to verify the part. I don't know if you can simply swap to EWG though.

My 2014 x28i has that plug connector blocked off altogether. So no issue with oil going accumulation due to newer design.

You can check out the f30 328i forum as they have a higher concentration of early n20 owners.
