Based upon what I've seen so far while driving the car in Germany, I think the sDrive X1 after break in will get around 32 mpg highway which isn't bad when driven around 70 mph in light traffic.

Overall, on a stay in Germany to pick up the car, I got 25+ mpg and that driving was perhaps 70% highway with some really slow city driving thrown in.. But on the on Autobahn, I must have averaged 80 mph and I pushed it to very close or over 100 mph a handful of times. In the US, I won't be driving those speeds so the mpg will be higher based upon what I've seen with the instantaneous mpg readout.

I do think the 34 mpg figure on the highway will be possible but that will probably require very light traffic and driving 65 mph which most people don't do

I wonder how much impact running the air conditioner has because I have always gotten better mileage in winter months when I rarely use the air except to remove humidity like on rainy days. I typically get 1-2 mpg better in winter, keep in mind that in summer when its 96-100 every day and humid here in SC my air conditioning is getting a major workout.

You use imperial gallons down there, right?
If so, converted to US gallons, that would be 47 mpg hwy and 32 mpg city.
Which seems ok for a 2 l diesel in a midsized car.

Unfortunately, we don't get the diesel models in the US, so a direct comparison is difficult.

I would expect it to be significant. According to a study from 2007 called "Reduction in Vehicle Temperatures and Fuel Use from Cabin, Ventilation, Solar-Reflective Paint and New Solar-Reflective Glazing", about 5.5% of all the fuel used in light-duty vehicles goes to the interior cooling systems.
I would expect that figure to be much higher in the South, and lower in the North.
(The heaters we run during winter don't use nearly as much energy - in part because they steal excess heat from the engine that's generated anyhow.)

Combined with likely not getting the inferior winter blend gas, I'm not at all surprised if you get far better mileage during winter, while we who live closer to the poles get far better mileage during summer.

I believe ECO PRO does more than just adjust throttle response; it also uses less energy while the AC is on.

My A/C was on the way home as well and was doing 80 MPH.

Two tanks of fuel without AC have shown no improvement for me. In fact, my mileage was actually lowest on my most recent fill-up.

But you also live in the North, and likely start getting the lower mpg winter blend fuel at October 1.

That's basically why I asked if people had done a short (20-30 mile) 65 mph, no A/C and no "fun" driving highway test. The EPA numbers are usually pretty optimistic. The reason that they have any credibility at all is that people tend to fib a tad about their excellent mileage, which is only natural. Of no course, no self-respecting BMW owner would ever do that.

From my experience, BMW's EPA mileage is more accurate than other manufacturers'.

Hey, now, don't generalize. I have never hidden that I average 14.1 mpg, less than the EPA figures for typical 203 engine vehicles. (It used to be under 13, until I installed a K&N air filter.)

Well BMW had better be confident in their estimates:

I hope BMW gets scrutinized, as well as ALL other car companies. I don't care who you are, lying to consumers is NEVER the right thing to do.

Thumbs up X1 sDrive 28i mpg's

98% of my driving is on the interstate. I get 30.1 mpg. My car currently has 1400 miles. Once this car is fully broken in i wouldn't be surprised if i get around the 34 mark. I'm pleased with my mpg's so far. It's certainly better on gas the the guzzler next to me.

Took my first hwy trip today of 380 miles and I got 30.9 mpg which is pretty damn impressive considering I was driving 75-80 the entire way. Up to this point I had been disappointed in mostly city driving getting 21 mpg but maybe it just needed a good break in run. Just for comparison our 2007 X3 use to get 22 to 22.5 mpg on the hwy. it's making you can drive 75 and barely break 2000 rpm.

I'm happy to report that even with the winter blend fuel, my last two roadtrips have netted close to 29 mpg. It's still a little short of what I expected considering the driving was virtually all highway, but it's far better than the 25 mpg I had been getting. The engine breaking in is probably a small contributor, but the majority of the improvement has to be tire-related since the bump came immediately following the switch to low rolling resistant Pilot PA3 winter treads. I'm thinking the Goodyear EfficientGrips might not be around long.

During hurricane Sandy i had to conserve as much fuel as possible -- so i drove very very gently. I got 35.1 mpg. Of course if i wanted to drive like that i would not have bought this car. That said, i thought it was interesting.

i just ran 40 miles on the SR91 East bound (Southern California) and i got 33mpg. 100% freeway, EcoPro all the way, light traffic 70-75mph. And i only have 600miles on the car.

but, i'm not impressed with the city. (yet...)

X1 2.0D

I am hoping to read more comments from theX1 2.0D driver or others like that person, as I am hoping to trade up and out of the japanese car I presently have and go into an X1 Diesel.

Here's my reference point on our 28i X1 xDrive MSport.
1200 miles in and getting just shy of 28mpg in mostly highway driving. By comparison, our X3 35i MSport after 15,000 miles is returning 25mpg. Same 2 drivers, same roads and the X3 does not have ASS or EcoPro!
Still early days for the X1, but will be curious to see, and report, on changes to mpg as more miles accumulate.
