It's not. It's a high quality copy apparently sourced from the same if not similar automotive suppliers.

- No Functional Test, you won't know if it'll work until you receive the key back

This might be nit-picky but i'm assuming because BMW is European and they follow the Euro Environmental regulations for electronics that we'll have to use ROHS solder which is a tad costlier.

So, unless someone wants to be a guinea pig....I won't know precisely how long it takes without a sample. I'm estimating conservatively, 30 mins?
Thanks for the follow up. I see your points and they are pretty important especially the functional test part. I'll be in the SF bay area in January for a buddy's baby shower. Any chance we can meetup on a Sat to test this out? Or if someone who is local can volunteer to test this out then that would be even better. Anyone?!
If you go, let me know. P/M me your number and let me know how it goes.

I personally don't have those skills to perform the IC swap but my staff can. However, our facility is only open Mon-Fri.

If you feel comfortable, you can send me a set of key fobs and we can work on it before you come up north.

Any updates from MFNATIK or iczer34 ? I'm very interested in this and if we have another confirmed case, I will try to have this done locally.

Sorry, never got around to having it done. Actually interested to see if I can get the display key to work instead.

Got my key today. Anyone have instructions on how to open the stock key? Got the new key open as it was pretty straight forward. Having issues with the stock key.

Get a rotary tool (Dremel) and a thin cutting wheel. Pop out the metal key. Make a small cut where the two pieces meet and then you can pry it be rest of the way off (it's epoxied together, not snapped together like most keyfobs). This is the only way that I've found to split the two halves cleanly.

The frequency of my key is 868 mhz.
So if i buy F86/F16 Key in 434 mhz and i swap the 2 chips, will it work or nothing can work because the frequency is different ?
Sorry if it is already explain but i don't totally understood the thread.

Best regards
It is a bit late to answer this but maybe someone else like me wants to do this mod.

According to my deep research and some chat with the suppliers, these keys support 315 mhz keys only and newer ones support 315 mhz and 434 mhz. If you happen to have a regular F30 car with the 868 mhz key, unfortunately it doesn't work.

So I did this mod successfully to my F10 M5, some details for anyone who plans on doing this themselves:

You need to swap both black chips, not just the one circled.

Make sure the key you buy matches the frequency of your key, in my case I had a 315mhz key so that's what I bought.

To cut the key blank, most locksmiths won't have the setup to do F series BMW Keys, so have them cut it as a 2016 Chevy Impala key (weird I know, but it worked for me. As always, YMMV)

My research also shows that tools exist to program the fob after dumping the CAS flash to get the encryption code, then writing that to a blank key. It's unknown if this will work with the retrofit key, but if someone has the tool I'd like to work something out to give it a try. One I found that could possibly work is an AK91+ key writer, but I don't plan on purchasing one.

For those local to south Florida, PM me if interested in being part of a group buy for the blade fob.

Once I figure out the forum rules regarding a group buy, I plan on doing a forum wide one around August/September, where people would ship me your spare keys and I have my technician and locksmith down here swap the chips and cut the new blank. Your old key case will be lost in the process, as the case is ultrasonically welded closed and must be cut open to remove the circuit board.

It was a knock off one from China, but after dismantling it, I'm finding it difficult to believe it isn't actually genuine. There are too many fine details inside to make me think this is some dodgy Chinese copy.

This key was meant to be for an X5 at 434MHz but the circuit inside is completely differently aligned to the one in the OP's photos.
Wondering if you ever got this working?
