Change Tire Size ?
Can I change my 225/45/18 to 225/50/18 on the same 18 inch wheel on my 2014 X1 X-line with out creating any driving risks or voiding the warranty. I want to soften the ride.

There's more variation in tire brand / model than you're likely to get by going to a slightly larger tire. Changing from PS2's to PSS's on my last car softened the sidewall significantly.
But provided you change all four at once, you shouldn't encounter any issues, but you are adding almost one full inch of diameter, so you might get some rubbing at full lock. Note that by changing to the larger tire, you'll be lowering the reported speed by 3.2% which will slightly help with the over reported speed BMW's (and all cars, really) read. Most new cars read 3-5% high, so you'd be removing most of this buffer. |

There won't be any rubbing with an extra inch of sidewall.

Hi donsbabybeamer,
Check out 1010tyres.com - Under TIRE & WHEEL TECH - Tire Size Calculator. They show a diameter variance of 3.4%. It is recommended you stay within 3% of the diameter of the original tire. I'm not mechanically minded so don't know what the other comments mean, eg. Can be done stock our after suspension changes. |
