Question for you X1 lovers?

Can you explain to me what is so great abt this vehicle? Why this over an F20, F31, or F25?

Your opinion would be appreciated b/c obviously BMW thinks this vehicle is a good fit for the US market over the F20/F21. When the US gets the F31, it will prob have very few engine/tranny choices. I, personally, don't get it. I must be missing something obvious because Audi is doing the same thing by axing the A4 avant and bringing over the Allroad. To me the Allroad and the X1 seem very similar in terms of height, utility, and image.

I don't particularly care for the allroad, nor the X1.

It will sell well due to price, handling, fuel economy and for those that don't have a big family or no kids at all. It really doesn't compete with the Allroad but the upcoming Audi Q3 and new small Mercedes and others to be launched. It's the bet selling SUV in Europe (premium brand). Why do people buy an X3 verses an X5 and it basically appllies to the X1. Most people prefer the look of an SUV over a wagon even if the wagon makes more sense in handling and economy.

I am looking to get one because it offers more space than a 3 series and for much cheaper.

In fact it will be the cheapest AWD vehicle BMW offers in the US but at the same time offer the same engines that the 3,X3, and 5 series offer.

The question should be: who would pay $5K+ extra for a 3 series wagon over this or even a 3 series sedan with AWD over the X1, except for its newer design styling.

Only thing that pisses me off is how you have to buy a premium and lighting package on the 28i just to get xenon lights. That's $5200 in packages of stuff I dont need, just give me $900 xenons.

2. mpg
3. correct size for empty nesters
4. we will add awd, and nav, and camera,
5. my 3 coupe has been perfect for almost 5 years

Referencing the Allroad, I just got my new Autoweek and it says the base price is $40,475 and the only engine is the 2.0 gas. It is a lot heavier (3891) than the X1 and longer. The dropped the A4 Avanti and added this so it competes with the new 3 wagon with all wheel drive in the spring. Autoweek said it was a pretty noisy vehicle because it sits so high.

If you consider the 1 series that's out now you can't get the new n20 turbo or AWD, and the x1 35i is actually cheaper than the 135!

So I don't care if you are in the market or a small suv at all but the X1 is the cheapest way to get either engine!

2011 BMW X1 23d  [7.66]
Here in Aus, we don't get any of the coupes/sedans/wagons with the AWD so our only option is the X range. For mine, the X1 is the perfect size - two adults & dog mainly on board, outdoor lifestyle - taken it "softroading" down on the beach, gravel/light mud tracks, can take a car load of guests + luggage if necessary, easy to park, awesome 23d engine delivers power and economy. Little bit extra ground clearance, etc. The list goes on. I love my x1.

thank you all. It def seems like price and accessibility to the engine lineup + the need/want for AWD is what's driving most folks. Based on that feedback, we will prob never get the F20/21 here in the states, which is quite unfortunate.

Just for reference, now that the 328 xi M Sport is available to build on bmwusa.com, I did a little experiment:

Built a 328xi M Sport and a X1 xdrive 28i M Sport
both M sport versions give you the same things
added Leather, heated seats, premium sound, metallic paint
the 328xi doesn't have any standard items that the X1 doesn't...

X1 = $39,620
328xi = $46,620

$7,000 difference, 17.7% upcharge for what? same engine, almost the same size.

Also a X3 is $3,000 cheaper than a 3 series sedan built the same!

I guess BMW is the only car manufacturer that things their sedans are worth more than their SUVs.

Super like your comment on the 3 series is more expensive than the x1.

Just go and compare the inside of the new 3 and x1.
Money wise x1 is the winner

Also there is no question that there is superior sound deadening in the E90 3 series compared to the E84 X1 - it is very noticeable if both engines are diesels. The F30 I would expect to be better still.

So you are saying they are close in quality or the 3 is much nicer? hard to tell by your comment...

We don't have any X1s in the US yet to look at. But people on these forums also say the 3 series is much nicer than the Audi A4, which I test drove 2 days ago (2013) and I do not agree, the 3 series is maybe a little nicer but not worth the $6,000 price increase over an A4 with similar options... I am guessing the X1 and 3 series is the same, maybe tad nicer in the 3 but not worth the $7,000 price hike! As long as the leather is nice and the layout is nice to look at, I don't care if its a little cheaper materials, my parents X5 is nicer than our X3 in that regard but the X3 still has a very nice interior in my opinion (much nicer than our old LR2).

i guess my fundamental issue with the x1 is it's validity as a crossover SUV. it just strikes me as a tall wagon, in which case, i would rather get a real sport wagon. that's why i compare it to stuff like the Audi allroad or the old school legacy outback.

Here in the UK the X1 is great but once you add a few extras you quickly start getting into X3 costing. We had an X1 and the extras added 20% to the price. A simular spec'd X3 was only 10% for the extras and only 10% dearer. So it quickly (for us) became a no brainer to go for the X3. But the X1 is a great car jsut the way BMW price it here in the UK!

I am curious what your measuring stick is for something to wear the crossover label with legitimacy.

When I look at an X1 I see all crossover and no wagon at all. Lined up against the likes of a Lexus RX350, Acura RDX, Cadillac SRX, or indeed even a BMW X3, it looks right at home to me. In contrast, when I see players like the Volvo XC70, Subaru Outback, or Audi Allroad, I immediately think "wagon with some body cladding".

I think there needs to be a reasonable amount of ground clearance, the ability to stand 2 bikes in the boot with the rear row folded, and a "reasonable intent to tow". What I mean by that is at the very least, the ability to tow 2 jet ski's on a hitch to the nearby lake without worrying about the structural rigidity of the vehicle. I'm not talking body-on-frame level towing here, but something reasonable.

I also feel that the RX350 and the SRX are "fakers". When I saw that picture thread of the X3 next to the X1, the first thing that came to my mind "whoa, that thing is low and small compared to an X3." The second thing that came to my mind was "Europeans have been driving this around for 3 years, thinking that they had SUVs - nice trick BMW". The third thing that came to my mind was "I'll take an F20/F21/F31 over this anyday."
