Thank you so much! This is very helpful to determine the right size.

I'm thinking you should bolt it to the hood like an old Land Rover.

Could the spare be fastened against the headliner?

Is there any structure there? If its high enough, maybe it won’t obstruct the view.

I doubt it. And it would more likely obstruct the view… Most times I strap it flat on the floor in the cargo area… When I am traveling and taking my dog I strap it up against the backseat, even then it blocks the view a little bit

I bought a donut off ebay, the correct size 130/80/R17, but the diameter is only about 25". I have new Bridgestone Driveguards and their diameter is closer to 25.75". Admittedly I've not checked tire pressure on the donut so maybe it will size up a little.

Does anyone know how close the diameter needs to be to not cause problems? I'm thinking about stress on the differential or transfer case?

I personally wouldn't run a donut on an AWD vehicle, and these I understand are especially sensitive to it.

Trouble is, we don't have a ton of cargo space to spare either. Perhaps this is why the run-flats seemed to the engineers at BMW like a reasonable solution despite the harsh ride, exorbitant cost, etc.

I solved it by throwing on a roof rack and strapping a full size spare wheel to it. I just keep that in the tire rotation to keep the sizes the same. Added bonus: it's really easy to find in a parking lot.

I bet your MPG suffers a lot I had an empty roof rack on my X.3 and it knocked me down about four or 5 miles per gallon I carry my mini spare inside and can travel on four or five day trips with my 80 pound Doberman In the back and the mini spare in the back up against the rear seats . There is plenty of room with this set up . There will be no problem With the mini spare and AWD

I hit a pothole and it ruined the side wall. After 12 miles steel belt was showing. Even if it got me 50 miles it wouldn’t mater as I was 300 miles from any BMW dealer or tire store that sold 19’s, even tho they were all closed on a Sunday evening

Had a similar situation happened to us on our trip down to Portland. The rear tire sidewall was shredded for the Bridgestone Driveguard. Because it was fun for we were able to lump to the closest tire shop which was 15 mins way..... Although it felt like eternity! Tire held up.... We avg about 60-90km/h during that time.
I'm not a fan for runflats due to poorer ride quality, but in this situation it was invaluable to getting us to a safe place.

No. Worst case you have to push and hold to turn off the electronic traction controls

Anyone here successfully fitted a spare tire solution (BZ, ECS, etc) to a 35i model? The 35i has bigger brakes than the 28i, and I can't get a clear answer out of the suppliers if their solutions will fit the 35i model.

Can you provide a reference to this, that turning off stability control is enough to not cause any undue stress or damage to the X-drive system? Because this would allow bmw x1 owners to utilize say, the x3 or x5 spare tires...

That's pretty epic, not going to lie! Thanks for posting! If I ever find a reasonable priced spare tire, I might have to do that!
