WTF

So I noticed a hose hanging from the rear of the vehicle, get under it and it goes to the "mechanical valve" near the muffler. Was told the muffler has to be changed, not covered under CPO and an un godly amount of money to change it. I am so over this car and the BS that goes with it. This is my first and last BMW.

No, plug it, tuck it away, and forget about it.
Google "golf ball tee mod" for further reading.

It is just a vacuum line that controls your exhaust flapper valve. You can splice it or plug it back in. Pull out the plastic tray on the left rear in the cargo area and you will see the control and the vacuum lines (line if it pulled lose). Hoses do not get pulled out by them selves. Don't blame the car.

A previous owner performed the "golf tee" mod. It's despicable that the dealer wants to charge you for a muffler replacement. They should have noticed it before they sold the car to you. Anyway, no need to do anything. It makes the exhaust note a bit louder and if you don't like it you can plug the hose back in. Simple as that.

Yeah, that's just a dealer trying to steal money from you. Nothing wrong with your car.

You can either plug the line back in, or better yet, just zip-tie it off and forget about it.

Please for the love of god tell us you didn't authorize that "repair"????

That dealer should be fined, or at least reported to BMW NA. Ridiculous.

Playing devil's advocate here. We don't really know the condition of the exhaust. Maybe unknown the OP, something is physically damaged by road debris. They sure as hell arn't going to repair an exhaust, bolt on new.

That's fine...anything is possible. But one can only go on the info provided in order to have anything even resembling a productive conversation.

The guy mentioned nothing at all about any road damage to the exhaust, only the hose and the mechanical valve. You just pulled that out of thin air.

And if road damage is present, and unknown to the OP, that's another huge problem.

Maybe the dealership found a family of squirrels living in the muffler, and do to local environmental regulations, isn't allowed to touch the nest. So they have to relocate it.

Should we tell the OP you can buy the muffler on ebay for $150?

OK so nothing was run over but something snagged it off because the nipple it plugs into is broken off inside the hose.I took it in for a car wash and noticed it after. Also at one "car wash" I was missing a rear reflector off the bumper. They wanted me to pay for it too so I asked them to check the car wash and low and behold there was one crushed in the washer. They replaced it for N/C.P.S. this was the dealers car wash.

Well I am glad you didn't go buy a new muffler. Sounds to me like you need to find the next closest dealer and work with them. Unless you want a completely quiet car I wouldn't repair the vacuum line and just allow the exhaust to be slightly louder. Not sure how that sounds on the N20 though.

Involuntary golf-tee mod.

Just fold the line over on itself and zip-tie. Forget it's even there.

Isn't it a "plastic assy." ? I believe it is, can't be welded to the pipe. This is wrong to just keep your hand out all the time.

It is, and sad as it may seem, it can't be ordered independently.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=18_0930

Fortunately, it is a completely useless plastic assembly, that doesn't need to be there in the first place, and no one would ever know was missing/disconnected.

Regarding keeping your "hand out" all the time. What I tell everyone...if you're not willing to take the time to learn/fix things yourself/ignore things as warranted...don't buy German.

I am fairly handy,HVAC tech for 38 years and came from a family of engineers. This is the first car brand that always has their hand out and yes they are over priced. Yes this will be my last German vehicle, getting to the point in my life where I don't want to work on cars any more. It shouldn't have to be this way, lesson learned.

Shouldn't have to be what way?

I thought it got ripped off in a car wash or by some other freak thing? What does that have to do with it being German?

Your insurance will cover the repair under comprehensive coverage; this was road damage.

Anyway, while the poster above you was a douche for who knows what reason, you're certainly making a mountain over a molehill here.

No reason to be so dramatic over literally nothing...your options for dealing with the freak accident like an adult are:

1. File an insurance claim...which apparently you didn't even think to do?
2. Ignore it, as it's a complete non-issue.
3. Buy a $150 used muffler on ebay.

And you're wrong if you think other cars don't package components into sub-assemblies that can't be purchased individually. That's a sign of the times and not a German vs. whomever deal.
