Adios

After 134,000 miles my turbo was toast. With that many miles I wasn't going to put too much money into the car waiting for the other shoe to drop. However got a great deal on a 2017 330i. Thanks for all your help.

What were your symptoms that the turbo was shot?

Mine was burning coolant and a little bit of white smoke was coming from the exhaust.

was it leaking coolant...is that what you mean by burning? or was there some type of internal leak?

It was a seal for the coolant passage through the turbo. I kept getting low coolant warnings. White smoke is due to burning coolant. When I put Pure's stage 2 turbo on, it stopped consuming coolant and the smoke in the exhaust went away.

coolant doesn't mix with oil in the Mitsubishi CHRA (TDO4LR)...I have a backup turbo housing in my hands right now..I literally just pulled it apart and the channel for coolant is separate from oil (and internal components). the white smoke you got was oil leaking past turbo seal (which I have happening on my X1 with no coolant loss). The updated oil cooler line fixes that (temporarily maybe but it there's a TSB on it). You got me scared there for a second. Anyways...good luck with the new car I'm sure it will be fine and you will enjoy it!

Coolant will never be designed to mix with your engine oil. I have two N55's which the turbo is made by Borg Warner. Engine oil burns blue, coolant burns white, and unbrunt fuel is black. OP is N20 but he hasn't comments since the original post.

Yep good points, but something to keep in mind: when oil leaks out of the turbo (past the seals) and is burned by exhaust gas (not spark plug ignition) it will be white also...which makes people think they are burning coolant
