phone on the passenger seat triggers belt alarm?

Sometimes I put my phone (iPhone 5S) on the passenger seat, but it always triggers the passenger seat belt alarm after a few minutes. Does it happens to your car as well?

I understand why it happens. The car does has some sensors under the seat (maybe both a pressure sensor and a capacitive sensor?) to detect the thing on the seat.

But IMO, the car should be able to distinguish between a phone and a person... I got a loaner (328i) last week and I did some tests on it. The phone never triggered the alarm.

Do I need to bring my car to the shop and do a check? Does the sensor in my car needs some kind of calibration?

Nope, not at all. I always put my Galaxy S5, keys, wallet, and sometimes a full gallon of water on the passenger seat. Nothing.

I never hesitate to take my X1 to the dealer for issues that piss me off. It's under warranty, hell yeah I'm gonna take advantage of that.

Nope, I put my phone and other stuff on the passengers seat and the alarm does not go off.

Sounds like something is wrong with your passenger occupancy sensor and you should take it in to get it checked out.

I've put things heavier than an iPhone on the passenger seat, no alarm.

Thanks guys~ it looks like other X1 doesn't have same problem, I'll go to the service department again and let them to do another check.

Actually I asked a service guy yesterday, but he said its normal because the radio from the phone could affect the sensor. I won't accept that...

It did it off and on for my Macbook Air...which is much too light for the d@mn alarm. I turned it off with my BMWhat app...nobody's going to ride in my front seat without it on anyway.

Does it happen if you put another object on the passenger seat?

No it doesn't. I tried my laptop, my heavy bag, a heavy bottle of Arizona green tea , etc... Only my phone triggered it.

I don't see a point taking it in. Just put your phone somewhere else]
