Can it take a 19" wheel?
Hey guys,
My wife has a '14 X1 and wants to get some bigger wheels. Wanted to check in here for some advice on how big she can go wheel and tire wise. It's an X-Drive. Recommendations? |

I'm pretty sure there are people here who have done this. Personally I wouldn't as you will have almost no sidewall and the thing will ride like shit (IMHO).

I have not personally tested the rumors that front and rear need to remain within 1% of total diameter or that you should not increase more than 3% of the stock diameter on xDrive vehicles. You can however use 19 inch wheels. BMW offered 19 inch wheels on certain models. You should just lower the aspect ratio of the tire when going up to a larger wheel size.
Here is a helpful tool to see what the changes from stock to whatever size your considering looks like. https://www.willtheyfit.com/

19's were an option on the M sport trim (tire size is 225/40 F & 255/35 R). You can run a pretty wide selection of sizes/widths on this car.
I find the ride with 19's to be fairly compliant, I think 20's would be excessive.

I bought my 14 s28i Msport with 18inch wheels to lower gear ratio 4%.
I got a little extra acceleration with 225/40r18 in Michelin PSS over the 225/45r18 Pirelli run flats. I could have ordered 225/40r19, so yeah, they'll fit if proper offset. |

Not trying to troll, but isn't your speedometer just reading faster?

Ha, yep! With speedo already too high, MY Scanguage II CAN BE CALIBRATED to REAL.
I set it to some traffic radar signs which is 4% off of previous speedo correction. X1 is geared up into outer space already, and I get maybe 2 more MPH CORRECTED in quarter mile. BMW has had 25 inch tires like this before, and ours new are 25.9 or 26. I knew to correct mph before test. There's a spot approx a quarter mile to a ramp where no cars. I'd always get 91 mph and now I can get 93. I can't measure any loss of MPG, and I can't make it get less than 23, and sometimes up to 29 long distance at 75 mph. I could get 30+ mpg if I never went over 65mph, but who would care. I also only have 26k miles in 5.5 years. |

This ... as noted the X1 has a 19" option. Check the offset and as an X-drive you want a square set up. But there is no way I would run 19" with our roads, especially as we have the stiff m-sport suspension. Several wheels have road rash (not curb rash).

BMW 19" option: 225/40 R19 / 255/35 R19 8.5x19 ET34 / 9.5x19 ET34
Not exactly super slim profile. Ride quality is fine, especially if you ditch the run flats. That said, I would have preferred a square setup so you can rotate the rims--the rears wear out a lot faster than the fronts.

I have s28i MSport with Pirelli P7 summer run flats, and I felt suspension firm, but not harsh.
When I put those 225/40r18 and 255/35r18 Michelin PS4S on in 5% lower profile, it seems even better than that, since non run fats. |
