Rear hatch button question

On most cars that I've driven that have a rear hatch like the X1, I normally just put my hand on the release button and pull up all in one motion. I've found on my X1, I have to press the release button above the license plate, wait for a half second until I hear the latch unlock then pull up. It's like its a two-step process as it doesn't unlock immediately.

Is this normal? Can everyone else just unlock/lift in one motion?

BMW has the electric lock release, so the delay is typical.

Electrical vs mechanical lock.

Same for everyone.
