Steering rack replacement

I have a 2014 35i M-sport with 38K miles that had a problem with when turning the wheel you could hear the steering whine. When I looked under the X1 I could see leakage.

I brought it to my mechanic and we found that the rack was leaking. When pricing out a replacement a new one was about $3500. A rebuilt rack was $1,125.
