Steering Wheel Knocking Sound at Low Speed (Repair Update)

I posted a tread earlier about a steering wheel knocking sound problem on my new X1.
http://e84.xbimmers.com/forums/showt...php?p=15703030

Here are some updates. I appreciate any opinions on this!

I went to the dealership several times to try to fix it, but failed. At the last time, they got an engineer from BMWUSA to help with it. They replaced several parts with another X1, but didn't fix it. They also found it happened on other X1 as well (only xDrive version). So, they stated that it was a normal design and couldn't be fixed.

I'm confused here... In my opinion, the steering wheel on a new car should be smooth and quiet. Since the noise is quite annoying to me, can they just say it's a normal design? How do they define a 'problem' or a 'normal design'?

Another thing is, they have temporarily fixed it once by replacing the steering spindle. Can a normal design be 'fixed' by replacing anything?

Here are some documentation of the repairs...

1 (Jan21, 2014)
Problem Statement: Knocking noise coming from steering wheel area when driving at low speed
Explanation: Steering spindle bottom worn
Repair: Replaced lower steering spindle
Result: Temporarily fixed the problem, but happened again in 2 months.
2 (Mar28, 14)
Problem Statement: There is a knocking noise in the steering wheel at low speed that you can hear and feel
Explanation: Found noise from the steering rack. Steering rack is on back order. Customer will return for repair.
3 (Apr23, 14)
Problem Statement: Steering wheel knocking noise problem.
Explanation:
Repair: Replaced steering rack. Installed new crush seals for the power steering lines.
Result: Didn’t fix the problem at all.
4 (May2, 14)
Problem Statement: Steering wheel knocking noise problem.
Explanation: This is a normal design and there is no repair.
Result: Didn’t fix the problem at all.

Does this happen on ALL xDrive X1s? Certainly sounds like something I would be annoyed with as well (can't stand squeaks, rattles, or other unusual noises coming from cars). I haven't seen anyone else on this forum mention it though.

If it only occurs on some X1s, how can BMWNA get away with saying it is "normal"? Normal happens on ALL cars.

The service manager said it happened to all xDrive X1, not all X1.
The record they gave me stated:
"...test drove both this veh and the loaner with shop foreman XXX, found that both veh are similar and both have the nosie..."
"...finally compared this noise to another X1 in the shop on 5/5/2014 and found that it was worse. At this time this is a normal design of the veh and there is no repair..."

Also, I don't think something happens on all X1 must be a normal design. It also could be a design flaw.

Is the knocking only when you hit full lock? Or does it make a sound throughout the entire range of motion?

No. It happens when the front wheels go across the straight status. It's hard to describe it here... Let me try it agian, it happens when the wheels turn from left to right or from right to left (across the center line). It happens at low speed in the parking lot. You can turn your steering wheel left and right and left and right to test it.

My XDrive 2.8 is as quiet now as it was the day I drove it off the lot. However, my hearing isn't what it used to be.

28K+ miles, no steering noise. However I do have some dash crackling noises in the heat.

Update:
I complained to BMW via phone as well. After three days later, they said there is no manufacture defect were found. Therefore, they won't do anything about it and will close the issue.

I brought a copy of 'lemon law' with me when we meet.

They said, it was not a defect since all xDrive X1 made the same noise. "You a re the only one complained about it." I knew it's not true, since there were threads about this issue before. I told them to search on the internet, they said, "I didn't receive any reports. Give me the vin numbers and reports of those cars..."

I'm really disappointed... I think this is not the way to solve problems...

You need to retain the services of a lawyer who specializes in lemon law. This defect is substantially impairing your use and enjoyment of the vehicle and could potentially be dangerous if not addressed due to perhaps a design flaw or defect when the vehicle was being assembled. You...yourself should not approach BMW or your dealer with lemon law as they will disavow and claim they found nothing wrong...when in fact you know that not to be true. They know or could suspect that you are posturing for legal action. Your next step is to have a competent attorney approach BMW corp and its counsel to take the vehicle through the lemon law process in the state where you reside. Make sure you have all documentation from the dealer and all correspondence from BMW. Limit your phone calls and, going forward, all communication should be in writing. Good luck.

I spent an hour or so looking thru BMW forums, reading about this. My X1 has a "clunk" (noted especially with engine off going left/right with steering wheel). It seems, like the throttle response issue, that this is another of those BMW "epidemics" that there really is no solid fix for. My surprise as a first time BMW owner is that a company making such good cars can have these lingering issues that are solvable yet ignored. Throttle, for example, can be fixed with software. The clunk, it seems, should have been addressed years ago. It's seemingly across many of the cars and goes back many years.

Frustrating - I'll ask my dealer about it when I go for my first service. I only notice it in the garage.... for now.... and maybe sometimes in parking lots. Mine doesn't seem to affect performance, per se. But it's a noise that just doesn't seem to be right.

Thank you so much... I think you are right, I need to hire a lawyer.

And also, in the meeting in last week, the BMW engineer finally said, ''we would like to spend a few thousand dollars to make you happy." But yesterday, the dealer didn't give me any additional discount rather than anyone else could get. They valued my car $2k lower than the price on KBB, and gave me $5k discount only (which is already on their website).

Steering spindle bottom worn on a new car should raise some red flags.
You or the lawyer should definitely focus on the safety aspect of this problem.

FWIW...I have developed the same "issue". Backing out of my garage, down driveway, every time I move the steering wheel I get a single knock sound and can feel it in the steering wheel. Only at low speeds. X1 x28i with 14,5** miles on it. ...continue to monitor....

I obsessed on this one for 2 months. I finally took it in and they replaced the lower steering shaft. BUT, this is nature of the beast. I sat in EVERY car in the showroom and all did it to some degree or another. My brother owns 3 BMWs. His older 3 series does NOT do it but the two newer ones (2007 and 2010) both do it. It's just BMW "design" - call it good, call it bad - it's their design.

And the only thing that came from my repair was a free alignment because they thought it needed it - which is fine after my New Hampshire winter. But I still have the clunk - perhaps less, but it's there.

Это похоже на дефект конструкции, что BMW не хотят это признавать. В основном эта проблема возникает в X drive
