OEM brake swaps?
Are there any BMW take-off brake calipers and rotors that will fit the X1?
I know a lot of 135 guys upgrade their brake systems, it would be great to take advantage of some cheap used parts and keep an all-OEM look. Possible?

This depends which version of the X1 you have. For the 35i, 135i brakes are a downgrade since we share calipers with the 335i.
For smaller displacement X1s, I believe that the BMW Performance brakes for the 1 series will fit. There is a blue X1 that has them installed in a picture thread here. |

According to realoem.com the brake calibers on our X1 xDrive35i have the same part numbers (34116773201 & 34216769101) as those of a E92 335i & 335xi, so it seems that would be the route to look for some upgrades....

I did some searching but came up empty. I'll look for that blue X1 now.

The user name is Bora and I found the thread that refers to an X1 sDrive 20d M sport with BMW Performance brakes installed.
Unfortunately most of the pictures are dead links and the direct link to Bora's personal web site now generates a 404 error. I found a single photo in another thread, a close up of the wheel and front brakes. Good news though, Bora was active today! I'm going to send a PM.

Worth noting that the six pot front calipers from the E82 had lots of issues on the track, mainly failed seals and cracked ceramic pistons. If you're looking for more than cosmetics, look else where.
I had a 135i and an E36/8 M Coupe (with single piston sliding calipers) at the same time and the MC had much better brake feel and track braking performance. |

That kit Bora had was a Euro only factory upgrade. I looked for weeks and called Euro dealers and nobody could find anything.
The 28i uses the same parts as a 328i. The 335i brakes may fit, but they may also throw your ABS system into a fit with the larger pistons creating too much bite force. I talked to an engineer at Stoptech about using a 335xi kit for my X128ix. He said it may or may not work, but he's 95% sure the 328 kits will work as long as the knuckle dimensions all match up to centre the disc in the caliper.

If we can get a part number ( or he can for replacement brakes from his dealer) we can start to narrow it down and look for differences. Ill ask my old shop foreman to get in touch with people and we can cross reference.
Edit: Also I poked around looking for a part number and it should be noted for Europe there are No performance retrofit kits available for brakes period. I also looked on Realoem.com and came back with nothing as well. Heres an example of what we are looking for, for the x1 http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...79&hg=34&fg=95 Edit 3: Interesting fun fact, the 6 speed used in the European X1 is the same one in the f30 320xi Edit 4: Worth nothing after checking part numbers e90 and e84 part numbers are different for the hubs. Could lead to incompatibility or nothing.... Last edited by PleaseAdvise; 03-07-2015 at 10:41 PM.. |

The Performance brake kit is identical other than color to the brakes that come on the 135i M-Sport (my car that I just sold). I know their shortcomings when used on track, the X1 won't be seeing a track except for 1 lap of Nurburgring to earn her sticker.
I'm interested in an upgrade for 2 reasons: I don't like the grabby break feel of the X1 when compared to my old 135, and (let's be honest here) cosmetics. I'm primarily looking for OEM brakes that would be an upgrade so I can be on the lookout for someone selling take-offs at a good price. I'm not going to invest in Stoptech's for the X1. That's complete overkill for our use, unless I could get them for 1/3 of their normal price. ;-)

Bora responded to my PM:
Quote:
Will the rear brakes fit? What rotors did you use? What brake lines did you use? How did the brakes feel/perform after the upgrade? Maybe Bora will see this thread. If not, I'll post the response to my additional questions.

This is great news e90 performance parts fit! Ill check to see if I can find out more about US part numbers!
Edit: PN appear to be the same as US 325i or 328i e90 Brake performance kit for the front, according to real OEM. http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-31...325i-328i.aspx Price is $1428 At Turner Motorsport. Last edited by PleaseAdvise; 03-10-2015 at 12:28 PM.. |

I want to do all 4 wheels, preferable the gray OEM versions not the yellow Performance ones.
I'm talking to a guy parting out a 135 about rear calipers now.

Leebmann in Germany:
http://www.leebmann24.de/bmw-perform...r-e90-e92.html http://www.leebmann24.de/bmw-perform...1-e92-e93.html Now, I ain't sure what the difference is. If anyone could explain... No papers for the X1, so not legal (here in Belgium, don't know in US). True proper BMW channels you could get it road legal (here) on a 1er and 3er but not on X1. Discrimination! I like them a lot. |

Also after further digging I found this post by e90 pilot that best summerizes "Ran into this exact problem. If you find a rotor with the correct diameter, let me know. The 135 rotor is also too deep and will not center in the caliper correctly. I've actually have a few track days on these brakes. There's a "shelf" that builds because of the part of the pad that doesn't contact the rotor. Hasn't caused me any issues as of yet, but it would be nice to have a rotor that worked properly. The other alternative is to have someone trim the pad. " What to take from this? E90 parts are what you should use for this vehicle. 1 series parts MAY NOT necessarily fit this vehicle. If it was my e84 I would stick to parts compatible with e90s only front and rear brake wise. The majority of parts shared with this vehicle are derived with the e90. Id go with this one http://www.leebmann24.de/bmw-perform...1-e92-e93.html as it is the best fit. Of course with that said I have to say a FULL front/rear swap has not been done. Bora has only done the front. We are treading in untested waters! I hope that answers your question completely! |
