Opinions on the N20 X1?
Just wondering if anyone has some real world experience driving the X1 with the 4 cylinder N20 petrol engine? How does it drive? Does it feel fast?
Canada has that model, but not the USA. It supposedly will come to the USA later this year and I'm considering it. |

Can go as fast as you want and is really nice and smooth when mated with the 8-speed auto tranny. No worries my friend.

Hi, I own a X1 XDrive 28i since october and All I can say is you will enjoy this 4 cyl. for sure. I have always had 4 cyl engines except for a couple months few years ago when I owned a Wrangler 6cyl 4.0l . No 4 cyl I owned is close by any means to this N20.
The N20 feels like a six. I chalenge anyone to prove me wrong. Last spring (2011) I had a chance to drive side by side A X1 with the N20 along with a 328i xDrive with the base 6 cyl 230 hp 200 pds of torque. Both engines were really close in everything. It's great that the N20 can simulate the flat six so well. The fuel economy is great too. But the fun factor is really there. This engine wants to go fast and it want it bad !!! The torque is really impressive. The turbo lag very short and the push is really hard. Very fun to drive. I suggest you check the "Sport pkg" though. The paddles on the steering are nice and the ride is "sportier" ... The tranny in "DS" mode (drive sport) is a blast. The downshifts are a pure delight ... No vibration at all. BMW has done a great job with this thing to eliminate the vibration. I think they add a second shaft or something like that ... All in all, don't be worry. As soon as you can apply for a test drive DO IT :- ) You will be the last "judge". Maybe you will disagree with me but I wouldn't bet a dime on that. Have a nice day ! The Z4, X1, new 328i, 528i will have this very N20 engine.
They all have the same output ~ about 240hp. This is the new 6, engine is impressive. When you push hard, you could hear the turbo is working at two rpms. Once around 3.5k, and then 5.5k rpm. If you have your windows down, you will hear them very well. 1 complaint is the lack of rear center armrest... what a shame!!! |

Thanks guys. Yea, I know the engine is used in other models.
I'm trying to decide between a 328ix or a X1 with the N20 engine. Maybe I'll wait for the X3 with that engine also. Either way, none of these are available here to see or drive, so I'm just sitting here speculating right now. |

I tested the N20 in X1 and 528 for what ever reason the 528 with this motor feels much better than X1. Which seems strange. The only thing I can think of is the 5 has a better chassis (F code) compared to the X1 (E code) which is at the end of it's life. |

It was the 8sp auto. Same as the X1. I think it boils down to the chassis being more modern in the 5er. The 528 felt smooth with adequate power but the X1 was rough, noisy and overall felt unrefined. Not sure why. When you get a chance test drive one.

Hi,
when my X1 was in the shop for clutch and cic warranty replacements, they gave me a F20 (1 series) with a 4 cylinder turbo-petrol engine to stay mobile. I just have to say wow: Those new 4 cylinder turbo-petrol enginse just feel like Diesels. Not from the sound or the vibration but from the torque at low rpms. You don't need to push your car to 3 or 4k rpm to get some decent acceleration. It just accelerates perfectly even below 2k rpm all the way up to 6 or 7k. The consumption was really good - I drove 300km in those two days and had an avg. consumption of 7,7litres per 100km (sorry you'd need to convert this to non metric values yourself :-). Half of the driving was done in downtown Munich the other half was Autobahn / or State-Highway. I'd prefer those new 4 cyl turbo-petrols way over the older 6 cyl. cars |

Hi,
I just wanted to add that the 1 Series F20 had a N13 engine installed. This is the smaller brother of the N20. Both engines share the same technology but they vary in size. The N20 has 2l and the N13 has 1.6l. So consumption wise the N20 might be 1-2l above the N13 because of the bigger size. The feeling of torque etc. is the same, 'cause I also had driven a N20 fitted X1 but only a few km's so I can't tell anything on the n20 consuption in the x1 |

Comparing the ride of a 5 series to an X1 is apples to oranges. I would expect a vehicle which costs $15K-$20K more to be smoother. The X1 is higher but still is based on the E90 which is probably the best platform BMW ever made up until now. If you drove an X3 along side a 5 series the comments would probably be the same and its frame is the same as X1 just stretched. A fairer comparison would be 328X for weight and ride but still the X1 is higher so it just isn't going to handle as well.
