I haven't even had it a day yet, and the eyelids are already starting to bug me. All the iDrive stuff is overwhelming. Oh, and my Platypus towhook plate holder should be here soon. Fortunately my sales rep was able to stop them before they drilled the front bumper.

You can remove the roof rails? If it didn't leave holes, I'd be doing that.

Yep. Holes need to be plugged. Headliner needs to be taken down. There are trim pieces that go in place of the rails. I could probably DIY, but I got the dealership to throw in a big discount on doing it for me.

If you would post pictures after they were removed, I would appreciate it. Interested, but holes/trim pieces give me pause...

I spent many an hour looking thru realoem using some UK and German X1 VINs as a starting point, never could find a parts or pictures for the rail trim replacement. If you could post some part numbers that would be great!

You don't need VIN's to search RealOEM. Should be here:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=51_7519

Right:

Ah, I was looking at that page and looking at it wrong, I was trying to figure out part # 5 instead of part # 1.

Thanks!

Grille de-chroming: completed. I almost bought OEM, but then decided to go with significantly less expensive ECS Tuning's parts. Fit is excellent, as far as I can tell. I went with gloss black rather than matte, and it looks like it was 100% the correct choice. I used a garden hanger that was handy to help get the tabs off when removing the original. If anyone wants a set of OEM Sport/no-Line grilles, let me know.

Oh, and the Platypus plate mount is installed, but is clearly blocking the parking sensor. : I contacted them and am currently waiting for either a different (more offset) plate or an RMA. Their website clearly states that it will not block the sensor, but it's covering it completely.
UPDATE: Cravenspeed is now telling me they sent me the incorrect plate. Hopefully the replacement they are sending will work.

Oops, pics should be fixed above now.

New wheels/tires should be arriving today. I love the look of the OEM 421 wheels, but it's time to lighten up and ditch the runflats. More pics tonight!

After almost a week of driving, I'm still not a fan of the throttle response. It has enough power, but getting to that power feels like work, whereas it felt effortless in the GTI. Sprintbooster might be in order, tough I don't like the idea of paying $400 just to have a proper accelerator. Another small peeve is playing music from my USB drive. The search feature is nice enough, but it gets weird when you have multiple albums by the same artist. If I select an artist, then select "All Albums," it arranges the tracks in alphabetical order rather than letting me play them in album order. My 5-year-old Pioneer HU could do this, so I'm not sure why it's so difficult for iDrive. Meh.

Oh, and I can't get the Homelink to learn my Chamberlin garage remote. It won;t even get past the first step of picking up the signal from the remote. I guess I'm going to have to go back to the dealer for that.

If I can remember, you need to push a button on the opener to allow the link. Once you do that hold the desired button under the rear view mirror till the light starts flashing then take your original garage opener and push it to open the garage and it will link with your home link. Try that before you head down there

X-drive chrome removed. No heat gun needed, the waxed floss went through it easily. Most of the remaining glue came off just by pulling and scraping a bit with my thumbnail. A little Blue Magic cleaned up any residue.

Wheels may have to wait a few more days. One of them came pre-rashed. Working with TR now to get a replacement.

I went with black wheels, and I really like the faux SUV look black trim on the body now. Originally, I liked the all body color, but I think this works. I still don't like the silver bar on the lower front fascia.

I don't see the point of moving the license plate to one side, if you have to run a front plate.

18x8 Raijins, about 21 lbs. Wrapped in Continental Extremecontact DW. Should be about 9 lbs less than the stock sets.

So, first off, I'm not super-thrilled by how Enkei achieved the 32 offset on these wheels. I was expecting more of a dish, but the spokes actually bow out instead. I think it looks good from a reasonable distance, but when you're right next to the car looking down at them they seem a little weird.

In any case, I can absolutely feel the reduced weight. And of course the Conti DWs are just fantastic summer tires. The X1 is much more nimble now. The steering is sharper and more precise, and there's no more of the slight lag I felt when turning with the SSR RFs.

I was mainly going for a square performance setup with minimal change (or slight improvement) to fuel economy. So the wheels are definitely doing what I want practically speaking by keeping things light and nearly identical to the OEM track. They're made with Enkei's MAT tech, so they should hold up pretty well to the crap roads around here. I just wish they had more of a dish look. If I had to do it over again, I might go with an Apex wheel instead.

P.S. I've never lowered any of the cars I've owned, but I've never owned a car that was in such desperate need of it as the X1. It won't happen any time soon, but there's a good chance it'll be on my to-do list for next summer.

I think they look pretty good actually. If you lower the car, that will make everything come together.
