same noise at high speed

I also have this very annoying resonance at high speed, in my case normally around 80 mph.
My car is basic model 18dSE sDrive with standard wheels/tyres.

Looking forward to hear if jimr gets it fixed OK.

What we need is the TSB (technical service bulletin) nummer which explains the problem and its fix to the dealer in this way we can easily request the fix...

Just left mine at the service today, just hope they fix it properly without any more issues.

Meanwhile, I'm driving one of the new 520 as "replacement car".

That should be an interesting comparison. How do they compare? I quite liked the new 5-series but my other half would have nothing of it . Does not want to drive a big car in our narrow streets so I did not even go for a test drive.

They have the same engine don't they?

As far as I know new 520d's have single turbo 184hp engine. For the comparison purposes, I got a 320d replacement car from the dealer and it was accelerating far more better than the X1 20d after 160-180 km/h. Easily reaches 240 km/h in highway. On the other hand, X1 rides much more stabile than the 320d in high speeds. 320d was skidding more when the road was bumpy and it was 180+.

Not a 5 series / X1 comparison but thought it might be helpful

Same Here with the noise

It was a big disapoitment for me to hear the noise the very first time in a Highway.

It starts at 120 km and goes to 140-160 km.

The big question. Can we do something ( Add a spoiler.. ) ?

Did BMW adress this issue ?

Tks,

Just got my X1 back (no more 520 test-drive. and... no more noise at high speeds! Yes!

(As I was getting home, at some point it started making "more" noise through the air vents, but thats a "normal" wind noise, that stops if you close the air recirculation - nothing troublesome, and it might be caused by more strong wind in that area; but seemed louder than I have ever heard before... Will have to check for it in the upcoming days.)

As for the new 520... It's a nice car. Not as powerful as my X1 (184 vs 204cv) but the new 8 speed auto-gearbox is awesome!
It also had confort/normal/sport/sport+ settings, that really did make a difference in handling, and the lighted accents on the interior (door handles and frames) are also great.

As for what I didn't like: the door storage compartments are nearly useless compared to the X1, and even on the armrest, there's not much place to put anything (for me, that am always carrying around stuff, I wouldn't know where to put it on the 5.)

The bottom part of the dashboard is a screen that shows lots of info... it looks great; but it isn't that great with strong sunlight... you can't really see it due to reflections and such.
(Also, this 5 had aluminum trims, it was reflected like hell in front windshield and side windows during the day.)

I still prefer my X1, but I wouldn't mind having the new 8 gear auto-box and the dynamic control modes (confort/sport) in it.

The new X3 has both: 8 speed auto and Electronic Damping Control (EDC) + Driving Dynamics Control (DDC). But it does not have the 2.0 203hp diesel engine.

Is the TSB (technical service bulletin) number known for this issue?

I have an appointment to fix the same issue with my car, it would be nice to be able to notify the dealer, so that any parts that might be needed can be ordered.

I don't know a TSB number, but as far as I know from some X1 drivers in a German board (http://www.motor-talk.de/forum/windg...-t2684572.html), the problem can be solved by adding some kind of adhesive tape under the sealing of the windshield or by refitting the windshield.

Smile Fixed !!

Hallo All

Got my X1 back yesterday and the noise is gone !

I spoke to the foreman who said that the problem was cured by applying the special tape along the top of the windscreen opening and applying additional bonding agent along the top. Not the first case either that my dealership had dealt with.

My car is going in on July 27th - I will let you know if it works !!
Hi jimr, did your X1 get fixed OK and the noise disappeared?

Hi everyone. Has anyone noticed the annoying resonance noise yet? The whistling noise fix is something different.

I have the annoying resonance and just this morning took it to my dealer (Vines of Guildford). However when we took it out with their chief technician it didn't happen at 80 mph. He had not heard of the problem on X1s but was sympathetic and said this often happens with wind related noises. They will be getting back to me after searching BMW data for any info.
I described the fix detailed by jimr above and the technician thought it all quite plausible.

Question for jimr: what is the name and location of your dealer, so might be able to get a reference to give to other dealers

Many thanks

No, no ressonance noise in mine... (and I am really picky about noises).

The currente noise that annoys me is a vibration noise that comes from the driver door - but just sometimes - when driving through rough roads.
I mentioned at the service but I guess they didn't do anything about it. :/

I had the same noise described, i supectede the air system but discovered by acident one day that the upper list over the windscreen was loose, so i taped it to find out and that was the problem.
So its fixed propper now and no noises anymore, just good old classic rock music :-)

Thanks jimr

Vines, my dealer, have now acknowledged there is a standard BMW fix for this problem and my car is booked in next week. They have also confirmed it is to do with the windscreen and will involve putting in extra sealant.

So the message to everyone else has to be just demand your dealer searches the BMW database of X1 issues and get it booked in...

Hi,
Apparently, this problem only affects X1 cars produced until a certian date....

A question to those of you with the noise problem: on what date was your X1 built?

My sdrive18d was built Feb 2010, and does NOT have this problem....

My xDrive 25i is from June 2010 and I don't have this problem. (Up to now ;->).
But there is a certain highfrequent whissel when I quickly release the gas pedal.
But it is not a problem.
