I took delivery of a 2014 X1 at the end of September, and it had 2013-2 on it. Before I even got my plates and registration, I got an email for the $250 update. I asked my dealer if they could update me to the latest, since I believe 2014-1 was available on the day I took delivery (probably for only a few hours, but still). Th dealer told me that they currently install 2013-2, and told me they'd get back to me.

Anyway, I found someone who had 2014 installation media (USB) and decided to take matters into my own hands. I tried installing it... and it worked without requesting an FSC code. I'm not sure why, but the install of 2014-1 went fine. I would really like to know why it installed without an FSC code, but I'm not complaining.

I am not an expert on FSC codes and map updates, so proceed at your own risk. I'm not sure what happens during a failed map update... do you loose your existing maps? If you are prompted for an FSC code and don't have it, then can you cancel and keep your existing maps? I took the plunge expecting to be prompted for FSC, and it just installed without any issue or prompt.

I don't recommend necessarily taking my "caution to the wind" approach, lest you be left with some sort of corrupted or missing map data. Maybe someone knows more about the process and what happens when you have a bad update or don't have an FSC code for the prompt.

I thought the same thing but mine is a 2013 and not only did I get an oil change at 12 months they reprogrammed the computer to 12,000 miles. I also noticed that the computer is going by production date and not delivery date. I bought mine on August 25 but it was produced in July and the computer shows 7 as the month for the last change and the next change.

How can you tell if you have the latest map version?

Under Navigation, hit the options button and scroll to the bottom to show the navigation version.

Our map is labeled as 112123.14. Road Map North America Premium 2013-2. Is this the old version?

BTW, our car arrived at the Port Hueneme port on 10/4/2013.

Yes it is the older version. Unless you have a lot of new roads in your area or are planning to travel don't waste your money on every update. Mine on my X3 is a 2011 version and it works perfectly well. Now when I get the X1 in a month I will expect the latest version.

I emailed dealer and he said when my computer says 2000 miles to go for oil change, bring it in early. That will be tomorrow, and will have ASS changed to last setting. I think I am OK with map setting as is for now.

FYI, I just got a call from my SA at the dealer and she was able to get approval for BMWNA to pay half and the dealership to pay half for my 2014 map update. They said this normally isn't standard practice as the eligibility is based on build date (mine was 06/17/13)...and my car was built before the 2014 map update was released. But in this case BMWNA wanted to "help the customer"! Hey, made me happy! Just waiting on a the dealer to get the update disk/USB...she will call back when they have it for me.

Just left my dealer. 2014 map update installed.
No charge.
Picked up my 2014 X1 on Sept. 24.
I had to ask, but they agreed the car was so new it ought to have the most recent maps.
That's how this should be handled.

Excellent! Glad there some dealers out there that don't give customers the run around. :-) Any noticeable changes that you can see with the update? Or is it strictly just MAP and POI updates?

Well I don't see any difference, but here's what the email from BMW said-

"DO YOU KNOW WHAT’S UP AHEAD?
WE DO.

Change is inevitable.

But change is also good – especially if you can move with it.

The road network changes by up to 15% a year. If you don’t stay up to date, the latest bypass might just pass you by. That’s why it’s important to update your navigation system.

The 2014 BMW Navigation Map Update brings you over 100,000 miles of updated roads. So you can rest assured that you are always on the fastest and most reliable route.

And it takes care of stops along the way. BMW Map Updates put millions of addresses and the latest Points of Interest at your fingertips, letting you focus on the joys of driving, and keeping your worries in the rear view mirror. So embrace the change. Purchase your update now for just $245* exclusively from BMW.

To make sure you always know the road ahead, BMW recommends that you update your navigation system annually to keep your navigation system running as smoothly as your BMW."

Thing is, it's so outdated already that a year newer won't make a difference.
  • It shows a railroad next to where I live - that railroad was closed in the 80s, and converted to a hiking trail starting in 1991. BMW's map software still thinks there's a railroad there.
  • Then there's the nearest intersection to where I live, which was a five-pointed star shape until five years ago, when it was converted into a normal four-way intersection. BMW's map software doesn't know that.
  • It thinks that there are toll roads in Connecticut. In 1988, CT passed legislation banning all toll roads. But the BMW map software still thinks they are toll roads.
And what's up with marking every cemetery as a public park?

And I bet ten bucks that these problems will still be there if I pay for the upgrade. The software is good, but the maps are like 25 years out of date.

Well got oil changed at 13,925 under warranty. Got ASS reversed to last default setting. But a little disappointed that my next service is stated at 16000 miles or 02/2017. I asked service manager about the 16000 miles and he said they can't change service parameters even though they are now on 10k service for 2014s.
