Spacers can be very harmful for drivetrain. You were talking about swapping the rims to 18s. If you buy 322 or 323 style rims 255 tyres will probably give the wider look you're looking for in my opinion.

I'm still not sure I'm gonna do this mozdal... The decision will be taken when I see my car at the delivery date. If I like it when I see it I will put schnitzer spacers on the 318 wheels. If I dont like it I will swap to the 323 wheels. In addition to swapping to conventional tyres in both case scenarios!
I think spacers cannot harm the car if chosen correctly by professionals. I think that this is just a myth resulted from bad unprofessional fitment. Two of my friends have spacers on Mazda CX7 and Audi A4 and both are absolutely fine! |

Hmm, if the spacer is designed for BMW models then there will be no problem. But I think that 255 profile tires will look more aggressive then the wider 225 tires from behind

I agree with the 255 it will look more agressive from behind BUT it will highly restrict me when I go off road routes (rocky roads = low speed and high risk of damaging rims and tyres), rainy/freezed roads = higher aquaplanning). 255 is great in terms of looking and driving in good bitumen roads.
225 is better in most situations BUT it looses on the asthetic look. With the spaces will be better looking at it from diagonal position front and rear but surely will not be the same as the 255... Big dilemma.... I like off road but I like the aisthetic look too... shit! |

It is now about three months driving my X1 after delivery and I'm very satisfied with the whole package. I gave some time in driving to see if I finally 17'' wheels are ok for me or should I go for 18''.
As I am on the comfort boat I have to say after three months on the 17'' that definitely 18'' with 40 profile is not for me and preferred to stay on the 17'' 50 profile with the intention to swap later on conventional tyres insted of run flats for most comfort. BUT the look was still not ok for me... I wanted the car to look more filled and complete. I finally put on spacers on last Saturday. This was the key action for the car to look perfect in my eyes!! 2cm back and 1.5cm front Momo design spacers. I have asked the BMW engineer and he told me its ok there will be no problem at all. There might be a minor detrition after about 150,000km runned which will cost about 200 euros.... (nothing serious). Slight difference in driving, feeling more stable and wider. HUGE difference on look!! Exactly how I wanted to look! I will soon take some shots for you. |

As one friend owner of a 520i and Nissan 350z profession engineer told me, the detrition MIGHT be on the part the spacer is touching (one side is touching the rim and the other another part), I dont know how this part is called!
This MIGHT HAPPEN after 150,000 to 200,000 klm runned and it is repairable by about 200euros... I never reached 150,000 in any of my cars anyway! Handling is better, feeling is better, look is greatly better, so why not! Have noticed no change on consumption or power or anything... Only difference is when you park you need more attention as the tyres can easily touch the gutter. |
