Some people get carried away, though. There is some limit, I think, where it might make more sense just to get a dedicated sports car than to take, say, an economy car and spend $20,000 in parts... But I can see the fun in doing so.

Sure, but lowering my X1 was cheaper than my set of winter tires/rims.

Modifying cars is a bad habbit for me since I do it for a living. Here is my lowered X1 35i with a 265/35R19 and 305/30R19 tire.

Some cars look good when lowered due to the low profile or of the body shell. Unfortunately the X1 and and SUVs don't. That's due to the high roofline. Likewise a lowered minivan would also like weird. I bought the X1 for what it is and I quite like it's raise suspension. Makes getting under so much easier. That said the Subaru Outback is still taller.

I'm not planning to mod my X1 due to other cars that are better use for this funds but I personally think x135 is a very interesting car for modifying since it still has the hydraulic steering and n55 and lower cost to buy than 335
I would personally get 335 coilovers, much bigger tires, alpina gearbox flash and the usual n55 power adds if it was meant to be my "fun" car as well |

My decision modding suspension or other systems is easy.
My s28i tracks straight, steering wheel straight, has massive grip, and no abnormal wear besides the rears a little more than fronts. I did put 12mm spacers on front to stop high speed sway, but I'm not about to change any suspension part that could throw off alignment or way car handles that I can't easily go back to. I have RX8 Mazda with crummy alignment and bottoming suspension even as a GT model. I eventually got a B12 Bilstein "lowering kit" for shocks, and it raised it nearly an inch to where suspension works really well. Car is still no more than 5 -1/2 inches off ground. RX8 needed work, X1 s28i doesn't. |

After years of low slung cars I welcome the nominal near in ride height of the X1. Even at the stock height it's still shorter than the CRV, cx5 etc. In fact it is barely taller than a f30 3 touring.
My 11 years old rx8 that I had since day 1 has no suspension issues. It gets alignment done every so often similar to my other cars. Tracks true. If you got your rx8 used I suspect some abuse from prior owner. It's getting an RB midpipe as a gift this winter. |

I bought my 07 RX8 "NEW" with 665 miles, and it had some customization like small pins strips (ok), and Enkei GF-1 7.5 x18 instead of heavier 8x 18 RX8 wheels. I could tell it wasn't turning right since I had auto crossed, and balance sway bars on a RX3 30 years earlier. RX8 has really soft rear that bottoms and everyone wanted to lower it. The Bilstein B12 fixed it perfect, but I'd already gotten it close with alignment for the least neg rear camber of -1.65, and most front with straight to slight tow out in fronts and slight toe in in rear. X1 s28i alignment feels right, and wear right so no need to even check. Thanks for your courteous reply. I can get weird on wrong day. |
