Sony A6000 for travelling

Will be backpacking around for a while and was thinking of picking up an A6000 with kit lens. I have an iPhone and GoPro 4 Silver and was planning on bringing just though. I just want something that is light, convenient and takes good pix. Not sure if I will be good with the phone (which I will have on me regardless) and GoPro or if I should leave GoPro at home and take the A6000. I will be in Iceland in Nov and plan on taking some pix of the Aurora Borealis.

I have an NEX 6, so I can't comment on the A6000 exactly. That being said, Sony's mirrorless cameras are top-notch. I always tell people that it's all about the glass (lens). A camera is only as good as the lens being used.

That said, the 18-55mm, power zoom lens is a pretty good lens. Not the sharpest lens, but very versatile. Great for traveling. ys tell people that it's all about the glass (lens). A camera is only as good as the lens being used.

Wouldn't bring the GoPro along for taking photos. Your phone and the A6000 should do just fine.

I have the a6000. Highly recommend it. By far one of the best cameras I have used.

GoPro photos are terrible. They have the fisheye from the super wide lens. My iphone takes way better pictures. I use the Gopro for some track day video, otherwise I don't use it for much.

An A6000 will be way better than any of the other cameras.

PS- I have a canon S95 that I can bring. Would that be enough for travelling? Is the sony the better camera?

Are you a decent photographer or pretty much just like to point and shoot on Auto? I can base a lens recommendation off your answer

I'm a pretty decent photographer. I have had DSLRs in the past. I currently have a Canon S95 and an Olympus XZ-2. Both are P&S and have fast lenses. I could use those for my backpacking trip where weight and space are valuable. My main concern is whether I can use either of them to taks pictures of the Northern Lights in Iceland. I prefer not to buying a new camera if I don't have to. The Sony A7 looks mighty fine but not sure if I want to bring something so expensive along. I've thought about a 6D with 24-105 lens but again, it's prettu pricey.

A few years back I bought a Panasonic LUMIX LX7. It has a fast f1.4 lens and the camera fits in your pocket. The frame is made from metal and its quite durable. What I LOVE about this camera is its size and quality of pics it takes - especially in low light. At first I was concerned that it only was a 10Mpixel camera... but after the first few pics... you realize that you don't need a ton of Mpixels. When I take a low light pic at night... there is very little noise in the photo. I also like that no one gives you a second look when you pull out this camera. That's not the case when I shoot with a DSLR.

I couldn't be happier with this LX7. Btw... the same camera is also marketed under the Leica brand. They are basically the same camera. The Panasonic has a Leica lens. Its a great little P&S camera.

Thank you everyone! I decided to stick with my trusty Canon S95. It does have a pretty fast lens of f/2.0 and takes great pictures. I am sure it will be fine for travel and taking pictures of the Aurora Borealis in Iceland. I probably shouldn't buy another P&S either way.

My workhorse is a 6D with several primes (28mm, 15mm fisheye, 50mm, 200mm) , and 24-105 zoom. I have owned an A6000, and found the controls to be clumsy, autofocus slow, and size too big, especially when coupled with my Canon glass to truly be a travel replacement for the 6D. I just bought a Fujifilm X100T though, and the thing is the perfect travel companion. It's compact enough to put in a jacket pocket, and it takes unbelievable photos.
