X1 Light Offroading (Lift Kit)

Some of you might not be pleased with the idea of lifting an X1, but humour me.

I don't intend on making my X1 a track machine or slamming it, but rather use it for practicality/light trail driving this upcoming summer for camping trips.

Just wondering if anyone knows anything about suspension kits that can lift the X1 a few inches? I'm not interested in just shimming in some spacers to make the vehicle look taller.

Eibach claims that they will eventually release a pro-lift kit for the X1, but no tentative date can be found.

The company's website doesn't list the X1 lift kit, and info on it is scarce.

I've been playing with the idea of getting a set of All Terrain tires. Anyone know how wide/tall I can go on 17" rims without rubbing?

OK, I'll bite. How much ground clearance are you after? X3 has slightly over 8 inches. Maybe the suspension from an E83 X3 would work?

Don't be afraid to off-road it! I have done it a few times and think it is great. A little more clearance and beefier tires would be nice but I would rather just go buy a truck than do that.

I'm looking for a 1.5-2" lift at most. Just a slight increase so I'm more comfortable not having to worry about scraping something.

I'm actually not too focused on lifting it, but would much prefer getting some better tires on there to offroad with.

Looks like you had fun! Haha. I dinged my lip of my bumper once already pretty bad... Hence why I'm a little more timid taking her off road. Also in my situation I'm trying to have my X1 as an "all purpose" vehicle in my life.

X3 is also based on the 3 series. Look up the parts on realOEM to see if they match up. Otherwise, your best bet would be coilovers, they should give a bit of lift. Although, I think you should really just get an X3.

Nope. Still no luck sourcing any parts. I checked the X3 part numbers and they don't match the X1's suspension.

Anyone know what the biggest tires are that I can get on a 17" rim to fit without rubbing? Like largest overall size of rim+tire/width.

Check out KW coilovers, they lower, but should also be able to increase height some. Most coilovers do.

My overall tire height on my summer wheels is .3" taller than stock, I'm very close to rubbing on full lock. You might be able to go up to a 27" tire without rubbing, but don't quote me on that.

That being said, 27" tire isn't a whole lot of extra clearance, we're talking less than a 1/2" over the stock tire. With a KW coilover, you might be able to raise the chassis 3/4-1". That would allow for a 28" tire and a little over 1 1/2" of extra clearance.

Thanks! I'll have to look into it. I'm not looking to get "bigger" wheels for more clearance, but rather, all terrain tires are just generally only available in bigger sizes, so I just wanted to make sure they would fit.

Before I lowered it, I took my X1 on various dirt roads, mudpits, etc, in the Red River Gorge in Kentucky and on Rally North America. As long as you watch your wheel placement it actually does surprisingly well. It's not a FJ Cruiser but it is capable of "light" offroading. Now that I am lowered I just make a friend take their car when we go to the gorge.

Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S are available in a 225/55/18 which has less than an inch taller sidewall than the OEM 225/45/18, I think clearance on OE suspension would be fine and you'll gain a tad bit more ground clearance as well. When the time comes for tires, this is the most likely route I'm going to go since I can't seem to find any lift options. If we're able to find some way to bring the car up a tad, I may go with something wider/thicker.

I gave up on this last year due to the scarcity for parts for this application. But it seems manufacturers are catching up.

I am very surprised to see this! I emailed last August and this was the correspondence:

My question:
"Hello,

Do you have an expected release date for the BMW X1 Pro-Lift springs? Also, does the pro-lift kit typically require installing aftermarket dampers or are the OEM dampers sufficient?

Given the part number and this looks available in other parts of the world other than US, definitely sending them an email to see if it's available now!

This is the German catalog and kit, it is not ordered by Eibach USA. Although some kits are used in both markets, you will have to contact them directly for this application since it’s not something we carry. All I can do is check stock, which shows that it is available in Germany.

This is the German catalog and kit, it is not ordered by Eibach USA. Although some kits are used in both markets, you will have to contact them directly for this application since it’s not something we carry. All I can do is check stock, which shows that it is available in Germany.

Please keep us updated on how this goes! I'm interested to see how it looks/performs/if there any issues ordering from Eibach Germany.

There was some question about GAWR (gross axle weight rating) and whether the kit will lift the car slightly less or slightly more, but we shall see! The kit is just about on the way at this point. Once I get it, I'll start a new thread with pics and details so stay tuned
