Car and Driver X1 xDrive 35i test

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...5i-test-review

See the link to the great review of the sport line 35i but not the M-sport package. Pro reviews think the Msport model rides harshly. A very good review. Note the writers comment on hydraulic steering and it's feel. Our X1 SAV is truly one of the great BMWs.

Bit off topic:
128i (235hp) a flat 6?! I didn't know that. Looked it up, USA has it and yes, a flat 6 instead of the turbo 4. It's the 130i base engine (260hp) then but less hp to make the gap bigger with the 135i I guess (still 300hp).

Interesting when they review the 35i they spec it so it costs 41,975. When they they do a long term review on the x28i they spec it so it costs over 47k. Then they complain it costs too much.

But they chose Orange in both cases.

Their long-term x28i review drives me crazy. They say they'd prefer the 328 wagon which costs less than their optioned out car, and list some random price.

Of course, if you option a 328 wagon with similar options to their x1, then it's about $10k more than the equivalent x1 (though the wagon price includes a couple small options not available on x1). So dumb.

Magazines ask for a car and accept whatever spec the manufacturer sends over. It's not C&D's fault that their 28i is loaded, that's just what BMW gave them. In retrospect, I think we would have optioned our X1 like the 35i they tested, we never use the nav and the screen really doesn't bring much other beneficial information.

I would have bought the 328 wagon if they were the same price. That is what is most annoying. They are nowhere near in price. The cheapest Wagon I have seen at a dealer is 48k. There are plenty of X28 in the lots with msrp of 36k. Mine listed at 39k. So basically I would have had to pay 9k difference. That might not be much to guys writing for magazines as we know what huge salaries journalists make but for me it was a big deal.

The 30i engine has a 3 stage intake. The 28i engine doesn't have it, hence the power difference.

This is why I'm happy I didn't bother with the tech package. Money I saved went to my summer wheels haha. I often find "professional" reviews are useless. I went to see that American Hustle movie which had rave reviews, worst movie I've seen in a long, long time.

Thanks for the info.

To really compare they should give the 'starting at' price and perhaps the stock options when comparing the same motorization.
Then again, if you are interested in a car you have to ask prices for yourself according how you would like the car to be. (And you will have to do your research because when you do you know more about the options then the dealer does, you hear a lot 'that isn't possible' when it actually is, same goes for reviews, not all info is correct.)

That was making my head hurt. I thought BMW and Subaru had made some devil's bargain when I wasn't paying attention.

Sorri, with flat I mean 'not forced' like compressor or turbo. To make the difference with the 2.8i 4 cylinder bi-turbo or the 3.5(s)i 6 cylinder bi-turbo.

It ain't a boxer, Beemer isn't Scooby.

Also, neither engine choice in North America is a bi-turbo or twin turbo. Single turbo in both.

Serious?
Would like to see the 2 against one another to see the difference in performance and fuel consumption.

Nice review. The e?? models are a dying bread...once they're gone, kiss BMW goodbye as a pinnacle manufacturer, as to-date, all of the f?? models are floppy and no-longer driver-focused messes.

The G chassis 5er is going to have a 3 pot. Most likely, the slowest 5er ever. Except maybe those that have died.
