brake job

Need front brakes and rotors and have always used BMW parts, looking to use Akebono. For those that have used them how do they compare to BMW parts, initial grip, distance etc...

Can't say anything about those, but I put Hawk pads and StopTech rotors on mine (all around) and love them.

Much better feel, more of a progressive feel versus the original which had more of an on/off feel to them.

John,

What budget do you have? That can help in selection. We use the following brands at my shop - Stoptech 309 formula if you are looking for more bite paired with EBC or Stoptech rotors, textar/jurid for OEM formulas and rotors(both those brands along with ATE make OEM BMW pads/rotors)

I've used Akebono before in Japanese cars, but never tried on a BMW.

Did my rear brakes last year using Akebono pads and, IIRC, Centric rotors with painted hubs. Saved the wear indicator and re-used it. I notice zero diff in pedal feel, initial bite, or any other attribute. I also bled off about a 1/2 pint of fluid. I’ll be doing the fronts in a few months and will again use Akebono.

I only use Akebono euro ceramics in the past 10ish years across multiple cars.
You will loose some initial bite compared to oem but the trades offs are worth it.
Low dust and great feel.
