I think the X1 35i is an afterthought for BMW, as it's a North America only thing, and likely being used to just dump the remaining ZF 6 speeds. I'd be a little surprised if it gets the new transmission before the E84 gets replaced.

However with the F30 3er, F25 X3 and the Audi Q5 with both the 4 and 6 cylinder getting the 8 speed, it is a little surprising that BMW is still using the old transmission on the E84 with the 6, but the new transmission with the 4.
X1 35i VS X1 28i. If the transmission is 8 speed, X1 35i is definitely worth of the extra $2000. For 6 speed, it is a different story. For normal drivers, X1 28i is fast enought. Probably, a few spirited drivers will consider X1 35i. One thing is for sure that for a long trip X1 28i is more quiet and has better gas mileage. Based on the gear ratio, I roughly calcalute that to maintain 75 mph on highway, X1 28i just needs 2000-2100 rpm, while X1 35i needs 2400-2500 rpm. Definitely, the 6 speed transmission will be gone in second generation of X1.

Do what you want with it, but I wouldn't buy the 28i.
I had one for several months, and ditched it for an X5 35d.

Even if the 4 seems enough on paper, you have to constantly hammer it to have power.
the 35i is more linear and progressive in power delivery.

With my X1 28i, I had to fill it up every 4 days.
The X5 35d gets filled up once every 2 weeks.

Yes I know, the X5 has a bigger tank, but it uses no gas !

Coming from an E90 35i, I was missing the smoothness of the i6.
The i4 will still need some refining...
We have the X1 28i since a year ago here in Canada, and there's an unusual amount of those in the used market.

Wow are you really getting better econ with the X5 35d? I hear you though I found the same with the 28 and the Q5 2.0 8s. Tranny is constantly trying, fighting really, to upshift and with 8 gears paddles or not it makes downshifting rather tedious and you will be downshifting or hammering the pedal to downshift, alot. That said I'm happy that everyone seems to be anointing the 8 speed as king and buying up 28s to get it. That's where I come in and snap up a 35 with the POS 6s that no one wants. Unless they get it together and give me a 20d to sample (will it be enough)?? 23d I wouldn't be as concerned.

Sat in the 35 (midnight xline with terra, ultimate) again. Verified my stand bag will fit horizontally in trunk. I should have brought wife's bag as two may be tricky although definitely doable without flipping a seat. Stock stereo is perfectly good, very nice interface, nice ipod integration. Now I kinda want the tech package dammit!! I think I'm letting go of the alternatives, this car is awesome, perfect size for me, nice interior (nice enough), effortless performance with the N55 and decent (so the epa says) mileage. Cool part is I can stalk ones sitting around dealer lots as I'm not so picky on the options. Gotta have leather, heated seats which I'm sure they all will around here. Base line ok, xline nice also with terra, sport line good with that too. Only one I'll probably stay away from is Msport. I'm looking for some comfort to compliment the 128 sport and don't care for the oversized M wheel at all either. Same tranny and they're all AWD so no worries there either. I'm guessing I'll be able to wheel and deal better this way- but I'll have to wait (way too early for this bargain hunter) and see.
