Why does the 2.8 sound like a diesel?

Had an X1 loaner a couple of weeks ago (the 335 was in for another hpfp replacement, but that's another story...) I was surprised by just how loud and diesel-like it was at idle. It reminded of a 2.0L VW TDI. Is there any reason why the X1 sounds this way at idle?

Direct (Diesel type) gasoline injection .That's why it sounds like a diesel I guess
