Hard down shift from 2 to 1
Hi guys,
I mostly do city driving, and when I do a long highway trip, especially when my car has more people in it (heavier), my transmission is not smooth as usual when it downshifts from second to first. It did it once right after a service, my transmission was downshifting so bad, almost like I was getting hit from the back. Dealer told me it was the transmission relearning. It eventually smoothed out. Last week it did it once when we were 4 people in the car after a good highway trip (though not as bad as the previous time and only once). I think that the X1 transmission is adapted / configured to your day-to-day driving, so is it normal that it gets a bit harsher when I'm not driving my car as usual? Thanks! |

Not sure how normal it is. The only time I get hard downshifts is when I push the pedal hard and it has nothing to do with learning. Same transmission as yours.

It happened once to me too. I had the equivalent of three adults in the car and slowing down abruptly. I tried to replicate with no success. I haven't reset the transmission adaptations ever so it wasn't from learning process.

I've had something like that happen a few times. Almost like an anchor got dropped out the back right before coming to a complete stop. Overall I am not a big fan of this transmission. Downshifting has been very jerky compared to any other auto I've driven. Even my DSG GTI was smoother than this.

It's strange but sounds like I have a completely different transmission from everyone here. It's not exactly smooth when cold, but after about a couple hundred feet it smooths out and I don't have any complaints about it.

Note that it never happened to me during city driving. I'm wondering if the problem shows up when the transmission is getting hotter (i.e on highway during long rides)

I run mine about 100 miles per day, about 80 of that running pretty hard on the interstate. I'm not much of a fan of the auto-sport mode, but Regular D is very smooth, both accelerating and decelerating.

Most of the problem I have is with the programmed downshift points and rev-matching. It's just too harsh when I try to slowly come to a stop. It likes to downshift at around 1500-2000 RPM, which kicks the revs up to maybe around 2000-2500 and makes the whole car buck. I sort of get around it by just knocking it into manual mode when I come to a stop. That forces it to downshift just below 1000 RPM, which is a lot smoother.

I don't think I've ever had it downshift from 2nd to 1st at 2000rpm.
I know this might sound ridiculous, but could it be a low battery? I know the computer tries to balance fuel economy when charging the battery and can end up undercharging out doing some weird things while charging. The hard downshift could be some attempt at a fuel efficient way to urgently charge up the battery. Try charging the battery fully and see if the issue comes back. |

I had an opportunity to let mine slowly drift to a near stop. Rpms would slide to where it just tickled 1,000, then with the downshift would only pop to 1200-1250 - almost imperceptible.

Mine is super smooth coming to a stop. Take another one for a test drive to feel how it should be. |

Women are fucking useless in noticing anything with nuance. She just DOES NOT NOTICE the hard shifts nor the absolutely INSANE throttle lag on the X1.
Mind you she still watches SD on TV, fucking bewilders me. |

So I just had the same issue but in a different scenario. Car not moving, feel like I'm hit from the back when I put the car from Park to Drive mode.
I shot a video here (put the sound loud, you'll hear the issue) : Booked a service to the dealer. I had a low charge battery warning the same day because I tinted my window and the car was kept in accessories mode for a while. No idea if it's related, because I had the same issue without any battery warning in the past, and the warning was not on when the video was shot. |

I see you have the AC on, idle is almost at 1000 rpm where as without AC it should be around 600 rpm.
It will be a bit more bumpy from park to drive with AC on. |
