Sport wheel w/ paddle shifters question?

2014 X1 - Xline - heated steering wheel

I ordered the $120 sport wheel with paddle shifters. My wheel doesn't have the thumb rest 1t 10 & 2 o'clock. when you look at the BMW build page the picture that appears when you mouse over this option shows the thumb rests.

Does anyone have this option and does it have the thumb rests with the X-line build?

Thanks in advance

I just took delivery of a 2015 Sport line and did not opt for the paddle shifters. I did not like them base on my experience with my wife's Mini. I much preferred the up-down shift mode using the shifter. That said, my steering wheel does have the thumb rests at 10 & 2.

M-sport with paddles has the thumb rests, other models with paddles delete the thumb rests. The BMW configurator used to show this correctly.

Can you take a picture? I ordered the same thing and I want to see what you mean.

Edit: Nvm, the 2XA wheels do not have the thumb rest. What do your paddle shifters look like? Are the they old solid ones or the plate ones.

Here you go...these are of my 2014 X1 X-Line with the Sport Wheel + Paddles. I can confirm there are no thumb-rests. The wheel is very comfortable though, I didn't even know some of the wheels had the thumb-rests.

Has anyone retrofitted the sport wheel? We're buying a 2013 X1 with every option except the sport wheel.

I think there a a few who have, you have to get the m sport wheel set up for the paddles and them have to have them coded...

You are correct if you mean that paddles just can not be added to a non paddle sport steering wheel.

I understand that I would need the sport wheel with the cutouts for the paddle switches. I have an extra M-sport wheel with the cutouts from my DCT 135i because I bought the M Performance alcantara wheel for that car. I was hoping to be able to order just the switches and then mount my old wheel on the new X1, then get it coded.

The X1 has a heated steering wheel now but the wife has agreed to give that up if I want to mount a different wheel. And since I already have that old wheel laying around collecting dust...

Exclamation Retrofitting shifting paddels

Hello dear Mr.Kleen

I've BMW X1 28i 2010 and have done the retrofitted the sport steering wheel and now have paddles for shifting by hand the automatic transmission. I have
ordered a special cable in USA and retrofit has been done by a professional mechanic it works perfect. If you are interested please tell and I can send a copy of wiring diagram and the name of US company where to order.

Coding won't do it, as you're missing some electronics. If you have a 35i (6spd AT) you can add the paddle shift retrofit kit from Burger Motorsports, but if you have the 28i (8spd AT), you're in uncharted territory.

The M-Sport wheel with or without paddles has the thumb rest, but what it does not have an option for is heating.

And BMW will not retrofit a wheel with paddles onto a car delivered without paddles. I know, because they first screwed up and delivered mine without paddles, and I had to wait for several months to get a new car with paddles, and otherwise identical.
They say that BMW NA will not allow it because (a) it's not just the steering wheel, but the column and wiring, and (b) the VIN encodes whether it came with paddles or not.

I would not want to be without the paddles. The up-down on the stick won't give you an option to temporarily shift down while still in automatic mode, which is very useful, especially for engine braking.
And shifting more than one gear is much faster with paddles too.

I miss not having a heated steering wheel, but driving gloves help.

A Loaner car I drove had the thumb rests and paddles. But the shifts are way too slow for much, driven a Z4 and 3 series (E90) with paddle shifters and they were more responsive and even added a blip on downshifts while the x1 doesn't

Interesting... If we had ordered the X1 I was going to get the paddles, but one that was less than a year old with low miles and every option (except the paddles ) popped up for several thousand less (and no 2 month wait).

I'm going to try some German friends, see if they can help. If I dig up any useful info I'll be sure to post it here.

I have them...and don't use them. My car was on the lot at the dealer so I didn't custom order it but I figured the paddle shifters would be cool. Well I used them once or twice around the time when I got the car and haven't used them since. I do however use the manual shifting with the gear select lever occasionally. I find it easier to operate than the paddle shifters. For my hands the paddles on the wheel are set too far inward and it feels awkward to use them.

They do look nifty though!
